Assistant Boys Basketball Coach - Parry McCluer High School

Position Summary

Parry McCluer High School is seeking an Assistant Boys Basketball Coach to support the Head Coach in providing a positive, competitive, and student-centered basketball program. The Assistant Coach will help develop student-athletes athletically, academically, and personally while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, accountability, and pride in Parry McCluer High School.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of basketball fundamentals, rules, strategies, and skill development.
• Previous coaching or playing experience at the high school level or higher preferred.
• Ability to work effectively with student-athletes of varying skill and experience levels.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively with the Head Coach, Athletic Director, school administration, families, and other members of the coaching staff.
• Strong character, sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to serve as a positive role model for student-athletes.
• Commitment to promoting sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, academic success, and responsible behavior.
• Willingness to participate in required coaching clinics, meetings, professional development, and training.
• Must successfully complete all required criminal background checks, fingerprinting, child abuse and neglect checks, and other pre-employment requirements established by Buena Vista City Public Schools.
• Must complete all required VHSL, school division, CPR/AED, first aid, concussion, emergency action, and other applicable training prior to or during employment as required.
• Must meet all requirements established by Buena Vista City Public Schools and the Virginia High School League (VHSL) for coaching personnel.

Reports To

Head Boys Basketball Coach and Athletic Director

Supervises

Student-athletes, team managers, and others as assigned by the Head Coach.

Job Goal

To assist the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a competitive basketball program that promotes athletic development, academic achievement, character, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the overall well-being of student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coaching and Program Support

• Assist the Head Coach with the planning, organization, and implementation of practices, workouts, games, and other team activities.
• Teach and reinforce basketball fundamentals, individual skills, offensive and defensive concepts, and team strategies.
• Support the philosophy, expectations, and systems established by the Head Coach.
• Assist with scouting, game preparation, film review, and other competitive preparation as assigned.
• Provide instruction and feedback designed to improve individual and team performance.
• Assist with off-season activities, conditioning, open gyms, camps, or other approved activities when applicable.

Student-Athlete Development

• Establish positive and appropriate relationships with student-athletes.
• Encourage academic achievement, good attendance, responsible behavior, and appropriate citizenship.
• Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, self-discipline, respect, and accountability.
• Assist the Head Coach in maintaining appropriate team standards and expectations.
• Serve as a positive role model and demonstrate professional conduct at all times.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students in accordance with school division policies.

Administrative and Operational Responsibilities

• Attend practices, games, meetings, tournaments, and other required team activities unless excused by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
• Assist with the distribution, inventory, collection, care, and storage of uniforms and equipment.
• Assist with practice and game setup and cleanup.
• Help coordinate team travel, transportation, meals, schedules, and other logistical needs as assigned.
• Assist with maintaining accurate team records and required documentation.
• Follow school division procedures related to student eligibility, participation, attendance, and other athletic requirements.

Safety and Student Welfare

• Maintain a safe, organized, and appropriately supervised environment during practices, games, travel, and other team activities.
• Follow established procedures for responding to injuries, illnesses, emergencies, and suspected concussions.
• Work cooperatively with athletic trainers, medical personnel, administrators, and parents/guardians regarding student-athlete health and safety.
• Immediately report safety concerns, student welfare concerns, suspected abuse or neglect, or other matters requiring administrative attention in accordance with law and school division policy.
• Ensure students are appropriately supervised before, during, and after team activities.

Communication and Public Relations

• Communicate professionally and respectfully with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaches, administrators, officials, school employees, and community members.
• Support appropriate communication between the coaching staff, players, families, and school administration.
• Represent Parry McCluer High School and Buena Vista City Public Schools in a professional and positive manner.
• Promote the basketball program and encourage positive school and community involvement.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student, employee, and school matters as required by law and school division policy.

Professional Expectations

The Assistant Boys Basketball Coach is expected to:

• Follow all Buena Vista City Public Schools policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Follow all applicable VHSL rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements.
• Comply with all state and federal laws applicable to student-athletes and school employees.
• Maintain appropriate professional conduct and ethical standards.
• Maintain required certifications and training throughout the period of employment.
• Refrain from conduct that could negatively affect the safety, welfare, or reputation of students, the athletic program, the school, or the school division.
• Perform other duties related to the basketball program as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, Principal, or designee.

Physical and Scheduling Requirements

The position may require prolonged standing, walking, running, bending, lifting and moving athletic equipment, and demonstrating basketball skills. The employee must be able to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, holidays, and other times necessary to meet the needs of the athletic program.

Terms of Employment

Seasonal, supplemental position for the boys basketball season. Employment is contingent upon completion of all required background checks, documentation, certifications, and training required by Buena Vista City Public Schools.

Compensation will be in accordance with the Buena Vista City Public Schools approved stipend schedule.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated by the Head Boys Basketball Coach and/or Athletic Director in accordance with school division procedures.
