UTHealth Houston is seeking a Financial Care Coordinator III to serve as a senior financial counseling expert and trusted resource for patients with complex insurance, financial, and regulatory needs. In this role, you will manage high-risk financial cases, provide advanced guidance on insurance coverage, financial assistance programs, and patient financial responsibility, and collaborate with clinical, operational, and revenue cycle teams to improve financial outcomes and enhance the patient experience. The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of progressive healthcare revenue cycle experience, including financial counseling, insurance verification, benefit interpretation, financial assistance, patient access, and resolving complex payer and financial clearance issues. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills are essential, as this role also mentors team members and supports process improvement initiatives.

Location: Hybrid (2 -4 weeks onsite for training @ 1851 Crosspoint Ave, 77054), meetings, additional training, etc.

Position Summary:

The Financial Care Coordinator III serves as an advanced financial counseling resource, assisting patients with complex financial, insurance, and regulatory needs throughout the healthcare journey. This role serves as a subject matter expert by providing expert guidance on insurance coverage, financial assistance programs, payment options, and patient financial responsibility while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and federal and state regulations. The Financial Care Coordinator III mentors team members and partners with clinical, operational, and revenue cycle departments to improve financial outcomes and deliver an exceptional concierge-level patient experience.

Position Key Accountabilities:

• Serve as the final escalation point for complex patient financial, insurance, coverage, and patient responsibility issues that cannot be resolved by Financial Care Coordinators I or II, exercising independent judgment to achieve appropriate resolutions.
• Independently manage and resolve the highest-risk and most complex patient financial cases, including those involving multiple payers, significant patient liability, coverage disputes, regulatory concerns, financial barriers to care, and multidisciplinary services.
• Perform advanced analysis of insurance coverage and financial responsibility, including benefits verification, coordination of benefits, payer requirements, coverage limitations, reimbursement considerations, and financial liability determination.
• Evaluate uninsured and underinsured patient circumstances and identify, educate, and assist patients with available coverage opportunities, including Medicaid, Medicare, Marketplace plans, commercial insurance, governmental programs, financial assistance, and other financial resources.
• Provide advanced financial counseling and recommendations regarding estimated patient responsibility, deposits, payment plans, financial assistance programs, billing processes, and available financial resources while ensuring compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
• Lead the resolution of complex financial clearance and patient access issues for high-dollar procedures, specialty services, and other escalated cases through collaboration with Patient Access, Revenue Cycle, Managed Care, Customer Service, clinical departments, payers, and organizational leadership.
• Identify, assess, and escalate financial, compliance, operational, and patient experience risks, recommending corrective actions and ensuring adherence to applicable regulatory, payer, and organizational requirements.
• Analyze trends, workflow challenges, and recurring patient financial issues to identify root causes and recommend operational improvements, including enhancements to workflows, systems, training, patient communications, and standard work practices.
• Serve as a senior subject matter expert, mentor, and consultant by providing advanced guidance, training, and case support to Financial Care Coordinators I and II, while assisting leadership with process development, escalation pathways, and best practices.
• Maintain expertise in patient financial regulations and organizational policies, including the No Surprises Act, Good Faith Estimates, financial assistance requirements, insurance discovery, and related regulations; support quality reviews, audits, continuous improvement initiatives, and achievement of departmental productivity, quality, compliance, and patient experience goals.

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent required Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, Finance, or a related field preferred

Minimum Experience:

4 years of progressive experience in a healthcare setting performing financial counseling, insurance verification, benefit interpretation, financial assistance, patient access, or other revenue cycle functions, with demonstrated analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret complex payer requirements, resolve financial clearance issues, and support sound financial decision-making required

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
