Physician - PACT - Primary Care (Fairfield)

Summary

This position participates in the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligibility requirements are set by the VA and must be met per VHA policy. The EDRP application must be submitted within four months of appointment. Program approval includes an award amount up to $200,000 and an eligibility period of one to five years, determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree (allopathic or osteopathic)
• The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State/Territory/Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification
• Approved residencies: (1) ACGME or AOA-accredited residencies; (2) One year of post-medical school training followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States; (3) Non-US residency training with three years of verified independent practice in the United States
• Exceptions: Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA-accredited residency programs may be appointed as Patient Resident Providers (PRPs) with certain limitations
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent basis
• PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they may have a limited scope of practice under supervision
• Additional: Surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs
• In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may request exceptions to the residency training requirement for physicians whose qualifications warrant action
• Proficiency in spoken and written English
• Board certified or board eligible in internal medicine or family medicine (preferred)
• Experience in Primary Care, Internal Medicine, or Family Medicine (preferred)
• Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) license
• Physical requirements: Must meet physical standards for the position
• This is a designated drug testing position with random testing after appointment
• Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; manual dexterity; ability to handle rapid mental and muscular coordination
• Ability to distinguish colors; depth perception; hearing with or without aid
• Hearing aid is permitted

Duties

• Coordinate care for a panel of outpatients as assigned by NCHCS
• Evaluate and treat acute and chronic health problems in clinic settings
• Perform histories and physical examinations; document findings, diagnosis, care plan, and disposition
• Ensure proper close-out with medication lists and appointment lists
• Perform procedures within approved privileges; prescribe medications as appropriate
• Order routine labs and imaging; provide initial interpretation of results
• Communicate test results to patients; initiate and expedite required consultations and tests
• Function as a preceptor for residents in the clinic setting; provide education to patients and families
• Assist in coordinating care for outpatient panels and ensure appropriate next steps in care
• Screen patients for hospitalization needs and coordinate care accordingly
• Work with a team including physicians, nurse practitioners, and support staff; demonstrate computer literacy for documentation and orders
• Clinical duties: approximately 80%-100% time; resident/medical student teaching: 0-20% time as assigned
