Certified Patient Care Assistant Medical Surgical

Primary City/State: Phoenix, Arizona. Department: M/S-Ortho 6AB. Work shift: Day. The BEMC Ortho Medical Surgical unit—a 72‑bed state‑of‑the‑art Magnet designated unit—is seeking a Certified Patient Care Assistant for the Med‑Surg Ortho department. The role involves providing routine patient care to a diverse population of acute‑care and post‑surgical patients, collaborating with a close, cohesive team, and actively collecting patient data and documentation to support the overall nursing plan of care. Candidates must hold a current Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) license, or have demonstrated direct patient‑care experience. Full‑time day shift: three twelve‑hour cycles per week (6:00am–6:30pm) with no fixed days. Weekend and holiday service is required, with a flat $1/hour differential for weekend shifts and an 18% differential for applicable night shifts. Qualified new employees may receive a $3,000 sign‑on bonus subject to a 12‑month commitment. Responsibilities Assists with activities of daily living and promotes patient health, including hygiene, mobility, and nutrition as needed. Collects patient specimens and data, including vital signs, input/output, and other delegated measurements in accordance with unit policies and standards of care. Recognizes and reports abnormalities or changes in health status and communicates accurately to other caregivers. Performs delegated procedures and uses equipment as instructed by a licensed professional—blood draws, Foley catheter removal, EKGs, and EKG monitoring—while providing necessary support. Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support efficient operation and communication flow throughout the department. Maintains complete patient records, including admissions, transfers, discharges, progress notes, and consent forms, and ensures proper scanning and filing. Maintains adequate supplies, completes requisition forms, reconciles orders upon delivery, and monitors electronic equipment inventory. May assist with patient transport—including pre‑operative and immediate post‑operative patients to critical care units—and participates in OR room turnover. Works under supervision, focusing on a fast‑paced environment with emphasis on customer service and compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, and accreditation requirements. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational background. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Current CNA license required for new hires; existing hires must maintain license. Minimum one year of medical clerical or customer service experience; experience in a hospital or physician office setting desirable. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Working knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy, including keyboarding skills. Passing score of 85% on ECG or EEG interpretation testing (or completion of related coursework) required for certain assignments. Preferred Qualifications Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) credential preferred. Recent healthcare experience. Successful completion of an approved unit secretary program.
