The intern develops civilian-recognized technical skills while learning Kirby-Smith shop operations, safety standards, and customer service practices.DoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Essential FunctionCommunicates and supports the Kirby Smith vision and core values of One Mission, One Team, One Plan, One GoalPerforms diagnostic testing, troubleshooting, and repair on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and powertrains under technician supervisionCompletes preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled service work on heavy equipmentReads and interprets technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and manufacturer service bulletinsUses diagnostic software and specialized tools to identify equipment issuesDocuments work performed, parts used, and labor hours in the shop management systemMaintains a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company and applicable safety standardsCommunicates professionally with technicians, service managers, and customers regarding equipment status and repairsParticipates in on-the-job training and shadows experienced technicians across equipment specialtiesConsistent and reliable on-site attendancePerforms other job-related duties as assignedDoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Minimum QualificationsActive-duty service member approved for participation in the DoD SkillBridge Program with 180 days or fewer remaining before separationMilitary experience in a mechanical, technical, or maintenance-related field preferred, such as wheeled or tracked vehicle maintenance, power generation equipment repair, or a similar military occupational specialty or ratingBasic understanding of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systemsAbility to read technical manuals and follow detailed repair proceduresWillingness and ability to learn manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools and softwareValid driver's license required; commercial driver's license preferred but not requiredAbility to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks in a shop environment, including bending, kneeling, and working in confined spacesStrong work ethic, commitment to safety, and professional communication skillsDoD SkillBridge Heavy Equipment Service Technician/Mechanic Physical RequirementsPushing/Pulling/Lifting/Carrying up to 100 pounds without assistancePhysical ability to squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, climb, and reach overheadMust be able to work in extreme heat or cold and wet, damp, dusty, or windy conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises, hazardous materials, and fumes/odors associated with the shopPhysical ability to perform maintenance on equipment for extended hours with continual mounting and dismounting throughout the workdayAbility to adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) policy and maintain individual PPE in a functional conditionThis is considered a Safety-Sensitive position.We are an equal opportunity employer and prohibit discrimination/harassment without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, disability status, genetics, protected veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or any other characteristic protected by federal, state, or local laws.
