Bioenergy Stationary EngineerFunctional Title - Bioenergy Stationary EngineerReports to - Section Manager, Electrical/MechanicalFull or Part Time - Full TimeRegular or Temporary - RegularWork Schedule - Monday – Friday 6:30am to 3:00 pmPosition Location - AccokeekGeneral Summary - The Bioenergy Stationary Engineer performs journey-level electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and boiler-related work in support of WSSC Water's BioEnergy / Anaerobic Digestion-Combined Heat & Power (AD-CHP) operations. The position operates, monitors, inspects, troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs boilers, steam and condensate systems, combined heat and power equipment, fuel train and gas handling components, auxiliary pumps and compressors, and associated electrical, instrumentation, control, and safety systems. This role resides within the electrical & mechanical maintenance series but includes specialized stationary engineer responsibilities for assigned boiler operations, including licensed oversight, operating logs, alarm response, inspections, and safe operation of covered equipment.Essential Functions - Operates, monitors, inspects, and maintains boilers and associated BioEnergy / AD-CHP process equipment, including burners, flame safeguard devices, feedwater systems, condensate systems, steam and hot water components, blowers, pumps, compressors, valves, heat exchangers, gas handling systems, and related auxiliaries Starts up, shuts down, places in and out of service, and adjusts boilers and supporting equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures, manufacturer guidance, safety requirements, and plant operating conditions Performs licensed boiler oversight responsibilities for covered equipment, including reviewing operating status, monitoring gauges and computerized control systems, making operational adjustments within assigned authority, and maintaining daily inspection and operating logs Responds to alarms, trips, abnormal conditions, and equipment failures; evaluates conditions using meters, gauges, SCADA/HMI screens, trends, and field observations; and takes or recommends corrective action to protect personnel, equipment, and continuity of operations Performs preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and boiler-related systems, including troubleshooting motors, controls, pumps, compressors, conveyors, generators, switchgear, valves, actuators, and associated plant equipment Inspects and assists with testing of boiler safety devices, alarms, automatic shutdown features, interlocks, water level controls, combustion controls, flame monitoring devices, and other protective systems associated with safe boiler and CHP operation Coordinates with Operations, Maintenance, contractors, inspectors, and supervisory staff regarding boiler outages, repairs, startup activities, inspections, and return-to-service determinations Performs failure analysis on boilers and auxiliary systems and recommends repair methods, operating improvements, and preventive strategies to reduce unplanned outages and extend equipment life Reads and works from electrical one-lines, P&IDs, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, control schematics, and other technical documents to troubleshoot, repair, isolate, and restore systems Supports maintenance and operation of gas collection, gas treatment, gas flare, CHP, standby power, and related BioEnergy facility systems as assigned Ensures compliance with applicable safety rules and work practices, including lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, fall protection, and safe handling of pressurized, energized, rotating, or high-temperature equipment Assists in training and providing technical guidance to other maintenance or operations personnel on BioEnergy equipment, boiler-related systems, safe work practices, and routine operating checks Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water businessOther Functions - May serve as project lead or technical resource on assigned BioEnergy and boiler-related maintenance activities May assist in coordinating contractors and vendors performing inspections, repairs, or specialty services on covered equipment Performs other related duties as requiredWork Environment And Physical Demands - Work is performed in an office and field environmentRequired Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities - Thorough knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the electrical/mechanical trade Working knowledge of boiler operations, steam and condensate systems, combustion fundamentals, auxiliary equipment, and safe operating practices associated with industrial plant utility systems Knowledge of computerized monitoring systems, alarms, interlocks, automatic shutdown features, and control logic associated with boiler and CHP equipment Knowledge of applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions, including hazards associated with electricity, rotating equipment, pressurized systems, heat, steam, gases, and confined spaces Ability to operate, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and boiler-related systems and equipment Ability to understand and work within the scope of Maryland stationary engineer licensing requirements applicable to assigned equipment and duties Ability to read and interpret blueprints, P&IDs, one-line drawings, schematics, specifications, operating logs, and technical manuals Ability to recognize abnormal operating conditions, respond appropriately, and communicate clearly with operations, maintenance, and supervisory personnel Ability to prepare and maintain inspection logs, maintenance records, and operating documentation Ability to work effectively in inclement weather, fluctuating temperatures, elevated locations, confined spaces, and other industrial plant environmentsMinimum Education, Experience Requirements - High School diploma or equivalent 3+ years experience in industrial electrical/mechanical maintenance, industrial plant operations, utility plant systems, boiler operations, CHP systems, or a closely related environment Experience troubleshooting and maintaining industrial equipment such as motors, pumps, compressors, valves, controls, blowers, generators, switchgear, or comparable process equipment Experience reading and interpreting electrical drawings, control schematics, P&IDs, and related technical documentsAdditional Requirements - Valid driver's license with no more than four (4) points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver's permit within ninety (90) days of hire or transfer date Employees in this position are designated emergency personnel and must report to work as scheduled or directed when WSSC Water declares an event requiring emergency personnel. Shift work, on-call duty, call back, and mandatory overtime may be required Incumbent must possess a Maryland Grade 3 Stationary Engineer License at hire or obtain the license within a timeframe established by management for the position Incumbent designated to oversee covered boiler equipment must maintain the active license and perform the associated operational oversight, inspections, log keeping, and response responsibilities assigned to the rolePreferences - Current Maryland Grade 3 Stationary Engineer License Experience in anaerobic digestion, combined heat and power, boiler operations, steam systems, condensate systems, combustion controls, flame safeguard systems, or gas handling systems Experience with SCADA/HMI systems, PLC-based controls, instrumentation, or computerized monitoring systems used to monitor plant utility equipment Completion of technical coursework or apprenticeship training in electrical maintenance, mechanical maintenance, boiler operations, industrial utilities, or a related fieldSalary - $39.28 - $66.33 per hour WSSC Water
