About the Job – Your Role
Join our dedicated team at Oregon Department of Corrections, where you'll play a vital role in advancing the health and well-being of adults in custody. As a physician here, you'll practice medicine in a unique and rewarding environment that values evidence-based care, trauma-informed practices, and collaborative interdisciplinary teamwork. You'll have the opportunity to work with Mental Health Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, and other Physicians, ensuring continuity of care and making a meaningful impact on a population with complex medical needs. Our commitment to professional growth, best practices, and ethical standards supports your development as a leader in correctional medicine.
Key responsibilities you'll enjoy include:
- Conducting comprehensive medical assessments, performing evaluations, and developing treatment plans tailored to the unique needs of our adult correctional population.
- Diagnosing and managing a range of acute, urgent, and chronic medical conditions using evidence-based guidelines and clinical judgment.
- Serving as a core member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, collaborating with behavioral health providers, nursing staff, and administrative leaders.
- Providing consultation and support to contract physicians and nurse practitioners, and facilitating referrals to specialty care when appropriate.
- Contributing to the development and review of clinical policies, procedures, and standards of care, maintaining compliance with NCCHC/ACA standards.
- Engaging in family and community consultation as needed, and serving as an expert witness to represent the department in legal proceedings.
- Managing admissions, discharges, and interventions—including surgery, special diets, and prosthetics—while ensuring secure and ethical healthcare delivery.
- Voluntary opportunities to provide 24-hour on-call physician backup in coordination with department colleagues, and responding confidently to emergent medical situations.
- Documenting care accurately and efficiently with our electronic health record system, and participating in quality improvement and peer review activities.
- Supporting the institution's Affirmative Action goals and pursuing ongoing professional development and continuing medical education.
This role is ideal for board-certified physicians in internal or family medicine who are interested in correctional or underserved community health. You'll receive support for continuing education, enjoy a collaborative work environment, and have the satisfaction of providing compassionate, high-quality care to a population in need. Physicians who join our team are represented by AFSCME and may be eligible for Police & Fire benefits through PERS.
We encourage candidates who are committed to excellence, integrity, and service to apply and make a difference with us in correctional medicine.
