Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Registered Nurse Duration: 8 weeks Shift: Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of one year of professional nursing experience preferred License: Current licensure in the state of employment Certifications: Valid driver's license Must-Have: - Nursing care - Medication administration - Patient assessment - Supervisory techniques - Emergency procedures Description: The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Providers in examinations and treatment of patients. The RN applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. The position performs all technical/clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. The RN will attend sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents and prepare a list of those to be examined. They will prepare the examining room and equipment. The RN operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures. They will call Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and notify them in case of emergencies. The RN examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries. They refer inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required by their condition. Emergency procedures will be performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider will be notified for treatment orders. The RN assists in coordinating professional medical services and ensuring their needs are addressed. Job responsibilities include monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. They provide guidance and supervision to nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nurse staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies is essential. The RN will utilize established policies and procedures in decision-making while using sound independent judgment. Regular evaluations of the provision of medical services will be conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services. Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is required. The RN assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. Monitoring all potential catastrophic illnesses closely is a responsibility. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary is expected. The RN must comply with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observation and recording of inmate/resident behavior must be conducted. The RN inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents. They securely store or safely dispose of supplies and equipment. Health counseling and health education will be provided on an individual or group basis as required. The RN assists in preparing and maintaining various standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures is necessary. The RN will review, process, and respond to lawsuits, attending court hearings when necessary. Facilitating the accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services is part of the role. Safety and accident reports must be prepared and disseminated as required by policies and procedures. Taking appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies is vital.
