Speech Language Pathologist
To assess and treat students with speech, language, voice, and fluency disorders.
Monitors students' progress and adjusts treatments accordingly;
Evaluates hearing and speech/language test results and medical or background information to diagnose and plan treatment for speech, language, fluency, voice, and swallowing disorders;
Administers hearing or speech/language evaluations, tests, or examinations to students to collect information on type and degree of impairments, using written and oral tests and special instruments;
Records information on the initial evaluation, treatment, progress, and discharge of students;
Develops and implements treatment plans for problems such as stuttering, delayed language, swallowing disorders, and inappropriate pitch or harsh voice problems, based on assessments and recommendations of physicians, psychologists, and social workers;
Develops individual or group programs in schools to deal with speech or language problems;
Instructs students in techniques for more effective communication, including sign language, lip reading, and voice improvement;
Teaches students to control or strengthen tongue, jaw, face muscles, and breathing mechanisms;
Develops speech exercise programs to reduce disabilities;
Consults with and advises educators on speech or hearing topics such as communication strategies and speech and language stimulation;
Instructs students and family members in strategies to cope with or avoid communication-related misunderstandings;
Designs, develops, and employs alternative diagnostic or communication devices and strategies;
Conducts lessons and directs educational or therapeutic games to assist teachers dealing with speech problems;
Refers students to additional medical or educational services if needed; and
Performs other work-related duties as assigned by administration.
Master Degree in Speech Language Pathology.
This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required include stooping and/or kneeling, reaching, talking, hearing, and seeing.
