Job Summary:

The Maintenance Technician supports the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of Jones Bros asphalt and aggregate facilities throughout Middle Tennessee. This traveling, hands-on role performs preventive maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and installation work on asphalt plant, aggregate-processing, and material-handling equipment. The technician works closely with plant personnel to identify equipment concerns, minimize production downtime, and complete repairs safely and effectively.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None. This position may provide technical assistance or task-specific guidance to plant personnel during maintenance and repair activities but does not have formal supervisory responsibility.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

· Inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair asphalt plant and aggregate-processing equipment, including conveyors, feeders, bins, hoppers, screens, elevators, drum/dryer components, baghouse systems, pumps, motors, gearboxes, bearings, pulleys, idlers, and related production equipment.

· Perform scheduled preventive maintenance, lubrication, adjustments, inspections, and component replacement to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned downtime.

· Assist with and perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs involving industrial motors, wiring, switches, sensors, control circuits, motor controls, panels, and related plant electrical components within the employee's training, experience, and authorization.

· Read and interpret equipment manuals, technical drawings, and, when applicable to the employee's training and experience, electrical schematics and wiring diagrams to support troubleshooting and repairs.

· Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues and determine appropriate repair or escalation based on the nature of the problem.

· Repair or replace worn or damaged components such as belts, bearings, rollers, shafts, pulleys, motors, hoses, fittings, guards, liners, and other plant wear parts.

· Perform welding, cutting, grinding, and basic fabrication as needed to repair, reinforce, or modify plant equipment and structures, when trained and qualified.

· Support plant start-up, shutdown, and production operations by responding to equipment failures and coordinating repairs with plant operators and supervisors.

· Use hand tools, power tools, electrical testing equipment, welding/cutting equipment, lifts, and other maintenance equipment safely and appropriately.

· Follow lockout/tagout procedures and verify equipment is placed in a safe condition before inspection, maintenance, or repair work begins.

· Conduct routine inspections to identify abnormal wear, vibration, heat, noise, electrical concerns, or other conditions that could lead to equipment failure or unsafe operation.

· Maintain accurate maintenance and repair documentation, including completed work, inspections, parts used, equipment condition, and outstanding repair needs.

· Maintain tools, service equipment, parts, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.

· Travel between Jones Bros asphalt plants and related facilities throughout Middle Tennessee based on maintenance priorities and operational needs.

· Operate company vehicles and, when properly licensed, trained, and authorized, other vehicles or equipment necessary to support plant maintenance activities.

· Assist with general asphalt/aggregate plant and facility maintenance as operational needs require, consistent with training, qualifications, and applicable safety requirements.

 

Required Skills & Abilities:

· Working knowledge of industrial electrical systems and experience troubleshooting electrical problems associated with plant machinery and controls preferred.

· Strong mechanical aptitude and practical troubleshooting skills for stationary production and material-handling equipment.

· Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, diagrams, and technical instructions; ability to interpret electrical schematics is preferred.

· Working knowledge of conveyors, motors, bearings, gearboxes, pumps, hydraulic and pneumatic components, and related industrial equipment.

· Ability to use hand and power tools and maintenance equipment safely and effectively; experience using electrical diagnostic/testing equipment is preferred.

· Welding, cutting, and fabrication skills preferred.

· Ability to identify equipment conditions that may affect safety, production, or reliability and communicate repair needs clearly to plant personnel and supervision.

· Ability to work independently, prioritize repairs across multiple locations, and respond effectively to changing production and maintenance needs.

· Strong commitment to safe work practices, including lockout/tagout, fall protection, PPE, and other applicable company and regulatory requirements.

 

Education & Experience:

· High school diploma or equivalent preferred; an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and relevant maintenance experience will be considered.

· Industrial, heavy equipment, plant, or related maintenance experience required.

· Knowledge of asphalt plant operations, aggregate production, or similar heavy industrial material-processing operations preferred.

· Industrial electrical maintenance or troubleshooting experience preferred; additional electrical training or credentials are a plus.

· Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required for travel between company locations.

· Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, preferred.

· Must complete company- and site-required safety training and maintain any licenses, certifications, or credentials required for assigned work.

 

Physical Requirements:

· Must be able to perform maintenance work for extended periods, including standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, gripping, and working in awkward or confined positions.

· Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, platforms, and plant structures and work at elevated locations while using required fall-protection systems.

· Must be able to access equipment located above, below, inside, or around plant structures and safely navigate uneven, rocky, dusty, or wet walking surfaces.

· Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and assist with heavier or awkward components through team lifting or approved mechanical means.

· Must have sufficient strength, coordination, manual dexterity, range of motion, and endurance to safely use tools, handle parts, and perform maintenance and repair work throughout the workday.

· Must be able to visually inspect equipment, read instruments and schematics, distinguish equipment conditions, and hear or otherwise receive alarms, warnings, radios, and verbal communications necessary to work safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.

 

Work Environment:

· Work is performed primarily at active asphalt and aggregate facilities throughout Middle Tennessee and requires regular travel between company locations.

· Regular exposure may include moving machinery, conveyors, mobile equipment, electrical systems, hot surfaces and materials, elevated work areas, noise, vibration, dust, fumes, grease, oils, weather, and other conditions typical of asphalt and aggregate production facilities.

· Work may require climbing plant structures, working from elevated platforms or lifts, and performing maintenance near production equipment after required energy-control procedures have been completed.

· Work schedules may include early mornings, evenings, nights, weekends, overtime, and call-in or emergency repair work based on plant production and maintenance needs.

· Required personal protective equipment must be worn and all company, facility, OSHA/MSHA as applicable, lockout/tagout, electrical-safety, and other required safety procedures must be followed.
