Laboratory Animal Care Technician

The Laboratory Animal Care Technician cares for laboratory animals and their environment while maintaining accurate records of their productivity, growth, and overall health. This role learns and applies procedures for maintaining animal inventories, preparing animals for shipment, and administering medications or injections under established protocols. The technician supports veterinary and research teams by following strict biosecurity and welfare standards to ensure animals receive consistent, high-quality care in a clean, safe, and well-organized facility.

Responsibilities
  • Care for laboratory animals by feeding, watering, cleaning, and performing breeding responsibilities according to a rigid schedule.
  • Maintain the work area in an organized, aseptic, and safe condition at all times.
  • Follow established protocols to ensure the health and welfare of animals in care, including performing routine welfare and environmental checks and promptly reporting any welfare concerns.
  • Perform physical examinations and health checks, including sexing and weighing animals accurately.
  • Collaborate with veterinary care staff to support the best possible welfare and health outcomes for the animals.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of animal production, inventory, cleaning activities, and overall care.
  • Inject or medicate animals as instructed and in accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
  • Prepare animals for shipment by selecting appropriate animals, packaging them correctly, and confirming the accuracy of shipment details.
  • Review the integrity and proper functioning of equipment and promptly report any concerns or malfunctions.
  • Follow strict biosecurity policies and disease prevention processes to protect animals and staff.
  • Operate cleaning, sterilization, and related laboratory equipment such as cage washers, autoclaves, and other sanitation systems as required.
  • Support quality control processes related to animal care, husbandry, and facility cleanliness.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support overall laboratory and animal care operations.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least six months of relevant large or small animal care experience, which may include work in a veterinary setting, on a farm, owning animals, or in a research environment.
  • Experience with animal care and animal handling in a structured setting.
  • Basic knowledge of animal husbandry and animal health monitoring.
  • Ability to have indirect and direct physical contact with multiple species of animals.
  • Ability to move about for long periods of time, perform repetitive movements, and operate equipment, tools, or controls.
  • Ability to move items weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Capacity to perform essential duties with or without an accommodation.
  • Attention to detail in following protocols, documenting records, and monitoring animal welfare.
  • Commitment to maintaining aseptic, safe, and organized work practices.
  • Willingness to follow strict biosecurity and disease prevention procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Any certifications such as LAT, ALAT, or LATG.
  • Experience in animal research or vivarium operations.
  • Experience in veterinary science, animal science, zoology, biology, or related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with quality control processes in laboratory or animal care environments.
  • Experience with animal breeding and animal testing under regulated conditions.
  • Exposure to anesthesia and euthanasia procedures in a controlled laboratory or veterinary setting.
  • Experience using autoclaves, cage cleaning and cage washing systems, and other sterilization equipment.
  • Prior work in a laboratory, animal care facility, or production-style environment with established safety and cleanliness protocols.
  • Comfort working with decontamination systems and sanitation equipment.
  • Strong reliability, time management, and adherence to structured schedules.
  • Effective communication skills to coordinate with veterinary and laboratory staff.
Work Environment

This role operates in a laboratory and animal care facility setting with regular exposure to animals, cleaning agents, and sanitation equipment. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, approximately 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., providing stable weekday hours. Work takes place in cleanroom, office, and production-style areas where adherence to sterile entry procedures, safety protocols, and cleanliness standards is essential. The position requires standing, lifting, and repetitive motion throughout the shift, as well as frequent use of carts, pallet trucks, and decontamination systems. Attire aligns with a professional laboratory and sanitation environment, including appropriate protective clothing and personal protective equipment as required by facility procedures. The team values safety, cleanliness, reliability, and collaboration, offering a supportive environment where technicians contribute to meaningful laboratory and animal care work. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Greenfield, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment. Benefits are subject to change and may be subject to specific elections, plan, or program terms.
