FLEET TRAINING COORDINATOR

Position Overview The Fleet Training Coordinator oversees the provision of high‑level technical training for automotive vehicles and off‑road equipment. The role supports a range of staff from entry‑level to highly experienced technicians, ensuring compliance, career development, and training continuity across the Fleet Management Department. Responsibilities Prepare training policies for management approval and administer approved policies. Perform research, consult with personnel and management to identify training needs related to staffing, skill levels, regulatory compliance, and issue resolution. Develop training plans, procedures, programs, and curricula to meet department training needs, including a career path from entry‑level mechanic helper to mechanic III. Monitor work procedures and conduct root‑cause analysis to identify causes of vehicle/equipment performance issues; develop corrective action procedures and present them as training or service bulletins. Prepare and manage all technical information and training documentation (service bulletins, recalls, manuals, reference libraries, procedures, comprehension tests, multimedia visual aids, etc.). Provide classroom and hands‑on garage training to department personnel. Prepare and deliver oral, written, and graphical presentations of fleet‑related research, analysis, findings, and procedures. Oversee facilities, equipment, and tools dedicated to the provision of training. Supervise associate trainers and administrative staff; act as supervisor to trainees. Administer training records, ensuring employees meet certification and licensing requirements; manage certification programs such as ASE and EVT. Evaluate and coordinate external training offered by manufacturers, dealers, community colleges, public schools, and other agencies; administer service contracts and agreements with vendors. Stay abreast of training developments in the automotive and heavy‑equipment industries; advise management of industry trends and recommend program improvements. Perform other duties as assigned to meet department needs. Working Conditions The position requires physical exertion, including lifting up to 80 pounds and maintaining awkward positions. Exposure to extreme temperature, air pollution, noise, chemicals, and other automotive service garage conditions is common. Weekend and evening hours may be required. The candidate must furnish own tools and safety shoes. Required Qualifications Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology or a comparable certification/licensing program of at least 18 months (e.g., NIASE). Seven years equivalent automotive maintenance and repair experience, or equivalent technical experience on a year‑for‑year basis. Valid Texas driver’s license and compliance with City of Houston driving policies. Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 90 days of employment. Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) access approval for City of Houston garages at Houston Police Department facilities. Ability to achieve and maintain ASE Master Technician status within 18 months of employment. Preferred Qualifications Current ASE certification. Experience troubleshooting or diagnosing fleet vehicle issues. Experience training technicians in shop or classroom settings. Ability to explain methods or approaches when delivering technical training. Veteran status (provide preference to eligible candidates who meet qualifications). Benefits and Compensation Pay Grade: 24. Salary is based on qualifications and comparable rates. Additional incentives may include ASE/EVT Certification Pay (up to $5,200 annually) and Evening/Nightshift Incentive Pay (up to $3,000 annually). Safety Impact Position Yes – subject to random drug testing; promotional positions require a drug test assignment.
