Job Description: Speech Language Pathologist - This position will be scheduled to work Wednesday and Friday each week.

The regular teacher contract is currently 184.5 days. Employee benefits include uncategorized PTO, paid parental leave and we accept PDC for salary placement. SLP's who hold ASHA Certification (CCC) receive an annual stipend
The district also provides continuing education opportunities Purpose: Speech-language pathologist will work with the Individual Education Plan (IEP) team to help resolve communication disorders including the mechanical aspects of speech production, phonation, attention/memory, articulation and language processing that interfere with the individual student's ability to derive benefit from the district's educational program. Responsible to: Director of Special Services and Building Administrator Qualifications:
1. Masters degree from an accredited college/university.
2. Current Speech Language Pathology license issued by the Kansas Department for aging and Disability Services on file in the Central Office.
3. A demonstrated commitment to career development and life-long learning. Essential Functions: Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
a. Serve as a resource to staff members and parents in the development of a balanced program for communication.
b. Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring suspected and identified speech and language delays/disorders.
c. Participate in development of goals and strategies for educational improvement.
d. Provide any assigned paraprofessional with appropriate direction, supervision and evaluation.
e. Ensure that all activities conform to state and district guidelines.
f. Ensure that all activities adhere to the professional standards.
g. Communicate effectively with all members of the school district and community.
h. Work effectively with community organizations and outside agencies.
i. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
j. Support the value of an education.
k. Support the mission and philosophy of Derby Public Schools.
l. Comply with all district policies, rules and regulations. Physical Requirements/Environmental Conditions:
a. Requires the ability to sit and/or stand for prolonged periods.
b. Occasionally requires the ability to move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
c. Occasionally requires the ability to stoop, bend and reach.
d. Must be able to work in noisy and crowded environments.
e. Must be able to work indoors and outdoors year-round.
f. Requires regular attendance and/or physical presence at the job. General Responsibilities:
1. Conduct an assessment and diagnosis of speech, language, cognitive- communication, oral motor/swallowing skills so that appropriate interventions can be designed.
2. Provide a therapeutic program to meet individual needs of speech/language students.
3. Assist teachers and parents in developing an appropriate individual education plan for students.
4. Ensure that Kansas State Board of Education guidelines for Special Education are met.
5. Participate in the screening, preassessment, identification, placement, follow-up and reviews of students' progress.
6. Provide appropriate information to students and families regarding community agencies and services available to them.
7. Collaborate all providers so that the communication system can be implemented or utilized in all aspects of the student's day.
8. Assist with public awareness activities that lead to a better understanding of the needs of exceptional children.
9. Demonstrate effective interpersonal relationships with others.
10. Assist teachers in the development and implementation of curriculum adaptations/modifications and appropriate classroom strategies.
11. Maintain an inventory of materials, assessment protocols and supplies.
12. Maintain appropriate, confidential records and provide timely reports.
13. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques related to multimodal communication systems for all identified students.
14. See that school district polices are observed during all activities.
15. Obtain prior approval for all special activities and expenditures.
16. Adhere to all district health and safety policies.
17. Other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Services and building administrator, which are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
