The Phlebotomist I plays a vital role in supporting laboratory operations through the accurate collection, processing, and handling of patient specimens. This position is responsible for performing blood draws and specimen collection while ensuring proper labeling, documentation, and handling. The ideal candidate will contribute to a high-quality patient experience, maintain compliance with safety standards, and support workflow efficiency in a fast-paced clinical environment.
?Key Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture and blood collection procedures using straight and butterfly needles with precision and care
Collect, label, and handle blood and other specimens (e.g., urine, fecal samples) according to established protocols
Educate and reassure patients by clearly explaining procedures in a courteous and professional manner
Verify and match laboratory requisitions with specimen labels to ensure accuracy and completeness
Process specimens including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, and freezing as required
Ensure 100% accuracy when reviewing test orders, requisitions, and patient information
Package and prepare specimens for transport following temperature and handling requirements
Store specimens appropriately to preserve integrity and meet testing standards
Maintain cleanliness of the work area, including decontamination and equipment upkeep
Accurately update patient records and maintain complete documentation in laboratory systems
Interpret physician orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing
Troubleshoot specimen collection and processing issues; recommend workflow improvements
Support onboarding and training of team members on proper techniques and procedures
Adhere to OSHA, DEP, and all regulatory safety and compliance standards
Participate in required training and stay current with procedural updates
Handle incoming calls professionally and respond to inquiries, including relaying lab results when appropriate
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
1-2+ years of experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting
Minimum 12 months of hands-on venipuncture experience in a clinical or hospital environment
Proficiency with venipuncture techniques using straight and butterfly needles
Knowledge of specimen collection, labeling, and processing procedures
Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to verify requisitions and maintain accurate records
Understanding of OSHA and related safety regulations
Phlebotomy certification (required in some states)
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with diverse patient populations (pediatric through geriatric)
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to put patients at ease
Effective communication skills across patients, clinical staff, and lab personnel
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Experience handling patient inquiries and communicating lab information
Willingness to participate in continuous training and process improvement
Work Environment
This position operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting with frequent patient interaction and specimen handling.
Typical schedule: 8-hour shifts between 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Rotating weekend coverage (approximately once per month)
Use of standard laboratory equipment including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems
Regular use of computer systems for documentation and communication
This role requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards, with ongoing training to ensure best practices are maintained.

This is a Contract position based out of Poway, CA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $22.00/hr.
