Bus Driver

Job Description Primary Purpose: Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Safely operate a school bus to transport students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated locations. Qualifications: Education/Certification: Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B or Class A with Passenger and School Bus Driver Endorsements) Texas School Bus Driver Certification Special Knowledge/Skills: Must be 18 years of age Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to follow written and verbal instructions Ability to communicate effectively Knowledge of student discipline procedure Ability to manage student behavior Ability to pass bus driver physical exam Ability to operate bus safely Experience: None required. Major Responsibilities and Duties: Vehicle Operation Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify shop supervisor of needed repairs Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures; complete required reports Keep records of bus mileage and number of passengers transported as needed Maintain a clean interior; request wash when necessary Ensure sufficient fuel (and engine oil and coolant levels when refueling for extra-curricular trips) Student Management Supervise students while they board, exit, and cross the street Communicate with parents promptly when students fail to correct behavior on the bus or at a stop Maintain discipline consistent with district expectations per the “Code of Student Conduct on School Buses” Report discipline issues to the Director of Transportation via written “Bus Conduct Report” in a timely manner Instruct students on safe bus riding rules and regulations Safety Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses, including local district policies Inspect bus prior to each route or extra-curricular trip (tires, lights, brakes, horn, wipers, steering) Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment (first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, reflectors) Correct unsafe conditions in the work area; inform Director of Transportation or shop personnel of non‑correctable conditions Report hazardous conditions along the route that compromise safety Other Operate two‑way radio equipment as needed to communicate with transportation office, other buses, and school campuses following proper procedures Be available for irregular hours as necessary Attend and complete required training programs to maintain state safety certification Perform any other tasks assigned from time to time Equipment Used: School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher Working Conditions: Maintain emotional control Prolonged sitting, reaching, repetitive hand and arm motions Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to high temperatures and vehicle fumes The foregoing statements describe the general purpose and responsibilities assigned to this job and are not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties that may be assigned or skills that may be required. #J-18808-Ljbffr
