Service (Road) Forklift Battery Technician

SUMMARY

The Forklift Battery Technician is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and installing customer’s forklift batteries and chargers in various material handling equipment. Must be able to verify the battery or charger is up to safety standards, maintain working knowledge and proficiency in all OSHA and local requirements related to all assigned work, and be extremely safety conscious to avoid injury by acid, fumes, electric shock, or chemical explosions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Communicate with suppliers about warranty issues. Able to burn lead to make connections and case connectors. Responsible for diagnostics on batteries, acid adjustments, rebuilds by replacing cells, connectors, cables, etc. Monitor and request supplies used in battery charger and repair shop, such as acids, cells, tape, connectors, etc. Keep inventory of all changing system parts. Be able to do all repairs to changers and systems. Charge, rotate, clean, and water batteries. Build relationships with internal and external customers and vendors. Receive all new batteries, record serial numbers, and maintain battery inventory records. Provide high quality battery and charger service work to customers. Identify and address problems and opportunities for the company. Perform other duties as required by management. Manage work and shop area to keep clean and safe in compliance with all safety policies. Use manuals, repair manuals, parts manuals, parts diagrams to troubleshoot components on material handling equipment. Safely use lift trucks, overhead cranes, and other aids to lift or move batteries into position for repair. Use miscellaneous resources and computers to reference parts, get information about batteries, and enter data. Climb onto, under, and into vehicles, and use hand and power tools to disassemble and reassemble. Attend training classes and keep current on product advancements. Act as a team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, providing world‑class customer service and maintaining positive relationships. Lift up to 75 lbs. (and occasionally more). Pass a DOT physical and drug screen.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 2 years’ experience in the battery business. Working knowledge of electrical circuits and electronics. High school diploma or equivalent. Certified forklift operator.

WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a maintenance shop environment with exposure to moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, chemicals, or solvents requiring proper safety procedures. Requires continuous full-body motion for climbing, reaching, pushing, and lifting. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must lift up to 75 lbs. (occasionally more). Must pass a DOT physical and drug screen. Noise level is usually moderate.
