This role serves as the Superintendent’s chief strategic partner and assists in providing leadership, coordination, and oversight across district operations, academics, organizational effectiveness, and strategic initiatives. The Deputy Superintendent supports the Superintendent in the day-to-day leadership and management of the school district while ensuring alignment between instructional priorities, operational systems, organizational goals, and district initiatives. The role works collaboratively with Executive Directors and district leaders to support effective communication, cross‑functional problem‑solving, organizational accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement across the district. The Deputy Superintendent serves as a key advisor to the Superintendent regarding district leadership, school support, operational effectiveness, personnel matters, and strategic planning. This role requires a highly collaborative, innovative, and solutions‑oriented leader with strong experience in public‑school leadership, organizational management, and district operations. Executive Leadership and District Coordination Assists the Superintendent in the overall leadership, management, and administration of the school district. Serves as a strategic advisor and thought partner to the Superintendent regarding district priorities, initiatives, and operational concerns. Collaborates with Executive Directors and district leaders to ensure alignment of district operations, instructional priorities, and organizational goals. Assists in coordinating cross‑departmental work and monitoring progress toward district strategic priorities and Board goals. Supports the implementation of district initiatives and organizational improvement efforts across schools and departments. Encourages innovative thinking, collaborative problem‑solving, and continuous improvement across the organization. Assists in identifying opportunities to improve organizational effectiveness, operational efficiency, communication, and service delivery throughout the district. Represents the Superintendent and the district at meetings, events, and stakeholder engagements as assigned. Serves as acting Superintendent in the Superintendent’s absence or as designated. Academic and School Support Collaborates with district academic leadership to support school improvement efforts, instructional priorities, student achievement initiatives, and accountability goals. Assists in monitoring district‑wide academic initiatives and supports alignment between instructional programs, school operations, and district expectations. Supports principals and district leaders in addressing organizational, operational, and instructional challenges impacting school effectiveness. Collaborates with Executive Directors and school leadership to identify opportunities for innovation, continuous improvement, and organizational effectiveness. Assists in supporting district initiatives designed to improve educational opportunities, student engagement, and student outcomes. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of public‑school operations, instructional leadership, organizational management, and district administration. Strong understanding of North Carolina public‑school laws, policies, accountability systems, and educational practices. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and complex organizational initiatives. Proven ability to think strategically, creatively, and collaboratively to address organizational challenges and support district improvement efforts. Demonstrated ability to foster innovation, continuous improvement, and effective problem‑solving across departments and schools. Proven ability to collaborate effectively with district leaders, school administrators, staff, and community stakeholders. Strong strategic thinking, problem‑solving, and organizational leadership skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to analyze organizational challenges and develop practical, student‑centered solutions. Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in sensitive situations. Certifications Possession of or eligibility for North Carolina Superintendent licensure preferred. Possession of or eligibility for North Carolina School Administrator licensure required. Physical Requirements Mobility: Ability to travel across various school locations, office environments, and meeting venues. Lifting/Carrying: Occasionally required to lift, carry, push, or pull items weighing up to 25 pounds. Sitting/Standing: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer; frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout school and district facilities required. Vision/Hearing: Must be able to read and write reports, emails, and directives; communicate effectively with stakeholders. Dexterity: Fine motor skills required to operate standard office equipment such as computers, telephones, and presentation equipment. Minimum Requirements Education Master’s degree in Educational Leadership, Educational Administration, or a related field required. Doctoral degree preferred. Licenses/Certifications North Carolina Principal License required. North Carolina Superintendent License or licensure eligibility preferred. Preferred Qualifications Successful school leadership experience required. District‑level leadership experience required. Experience supervising multiple departments and senior‑level administrators preferred. Demonstrated success leading large‑scale organizational improvement initiatives. Strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction, school improvement, MTSS, accountability systems, educational technology, student support services, athletics, and public‑school operations. Exceptional leadership, communication, strategic planning, problem‑solving, and organizational skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district staff, school administrators, families, community stakeholders, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all aspects of the position. Working Conditions Typical work hours follow a standard administrative schedule but regularly require evening and weekend work to attend Board meetings, district events, professional development activities, community programs, athletic events, or respond to district needs and priorities.
