Vehicle Technician

Job TitleUnder the daily supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, this individual performs semi-skilled mechanical tasks in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel and propane powered vehicles and equipment. This position will have the opportunity to learn to maintain and repair hybrid powered vehicles. This individual performs routine inspections, minor repairs and repetitive servicing duties, as assigned, and conducted independently in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safety regulations. This position is considered safety-sensitive under the US Department of Transportation and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Island Transit authority. The use of marijuana and illegal drugs is prohibited at any time while employed by Island Transit. Premium share for dependent coverage Optional employee paid benefits include life insurance, critical illness, hospital indemnity, accident, identity theft and fraud protection, group legal plan Paid Vacation, Sick and Floating Holiday leave Washington State Retirement Plan (PERS) and an optional 457(b) deferred compensation planExamples of DutiesThe following list is a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities but should not be considered inclusive.Performs routine preventive maintenance on gasoline, diesel, and propane powered vehicles and equipment that includes safety inspections, lubrication, changing of fluids, filters, and related tasks.Assists in replacing and repairing engines, alternators, starters, transmissions, differentials, drive lines, radiators, and air and brake systems as directed by the supervisor.Checks vehicle fluid levels and services batteries.Changes headlights, interior and exterior lights, wiper blades, tires or other components.Assists in emergency roadside repairs and assistance including vehicle chaining as necessary.Conducts road test of transit buses, support vehicles to ensure vehicles and equipment are in safe operating condition.Transports vehicles as necessary to outside vendors for repair work as needed.Maintains maintenance records documenting work done, material used and time spent.Uses hand and power tools and equipment such as wrenches, power drills, jacks and lifts.Maintains a clean and organized work area.Assists in after-hours service calls as needed.Understand and follows oral and written instructions from a supervisor; read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. These instructions are in English.Performs other duties as assigned.QualificationsKnowledge of operation and mechanics of gasoline, diesel and propane engines. Ability to use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials and other tools and equipment used in the service and repaid of heavy equipment. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to use computers for diagnostic procedures, work orders, repair and parts and inventory tracking. Work as a team with other employees in a directed work team environment. Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures. Ability to conceptualize the work required though observation or a verbal description and determine appropriate way to complete the work. Willingness and ability to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including evenings, weekends and holidays, as necessary. Ability to understand hazards and safety precaution requirements and regulations. Ability to attend First Aid/CPR and any educational and training needed to maintain necessary skill level to properly perform the functions of this position. Out of area or overnight travel may occasionally be required.Qualifications and Experience:High School diploma or equivalent, and completion of or attendance at an automotive mechanics course or apprentice program OR combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills to perform the job.One year of experience in a medium to heavy duty vehicle or bus maintenance is desirable.Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license, and be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License with passenger endorsement and air brake restriction lifted. Training & Testing provided by Island Transit.Must have an acceptable driving record that meets the agency's hiring criteria and maintain acceptable driving record during employment.Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions, Tools and Equipment:May work outside in all weather conditions. Workspace is conducted where temperature varies with weather conditions. Lighting in the work area is fluorescent for safety purposes. Work environment is loud due to vehicle motors and equipment with exposure to fumes, smoke, vapors, or chemicals. Personal protective safety items are required and provided by Island Transit.Ability to lift and carry fifty pounds, sometimes overhead; maneuver heavier equipment up to 100 pounds.Must have agility to use various tools.May work at heights, alone or with others.Ability to distinguish color and have visual ability to maintain and repair equipment.Drive a commercial motor vehicle as related to repair and maintenance of vehicle mechanical systems.Continuous use of all senses including while performing duties to diagnose malfunctions and to communicate with co-workers; includes climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing/listening, seeing/observing, repetitive motions, and carrying.Work in confined spaces for an extended period of time; move up and down stairs; gain access under vehicles for repair and maintenance.Requires physical strength and ability, sufficient to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.Special Requirements:Must maintain an acceptable driving record level throughout employment, as monitored by periodic reviews of motor vehicle records.Employment is contingent upon successful completion of DOT physical examination, DOT drug test to be certified for the position, an employment reference check, criminal background check and a five-year motor vehicle history check.
