Medical-Surgical RN Job Requirements

• Current New York State Registered Nurse license
• At least 1 year of experience working as a Registered Nurse in an acute-care medical-surgical setting
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
• Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification through the American Heart Association or RQI
• National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
• Ability to work rotating day and night shifts, weekends, holidays, and scheduled on-call assignments
• Strong clinical judgment, communication, organization, and teamwork skills

Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse Responsibilities

• Assess patients and families through observation, communication, clinical evaluation, and review of available health information.
• Develop, implement, and update individualized plans of care in collaboration with patients, families, providers, and the interdisciplinary care team.
• Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to adult, adolescent, and geriatric patients with a range of medical conditions.
• Administer medications and treatments accurately while monitoring patient responses and changes in condition.
• Promote patient safety, comfort, dignity, rights, and emotional well-being throughout the care experience.
• Educate patients and families about diagnoses, medications, self-care, lifestyle changes, and discharge needs.
• Delegate tasks appropriately and collaborate with nursing staff and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
• Apply infection prevention practices and maintain compliance with safety standards related to potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
• Document assessments, interventions, education, patient responses, and progress accurately and promptly.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and pursue ongoing professional development to strengthen nursing practice.
