Job Description Summary You will serve as an Electrician Leader in the Department of the Navy, working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Trident Refit Facility Bangor, and Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility. Applicants will only be considered for positions within their own UIC; for example, if you are within UIC 4523A, you will only be considered for positions within 4523A. Responsibilities Determine placement of electrical distribution panels and other equipment. Install, maintain, troubleshoot, or repair electrical equipment, systems, generators, switchboards, or control equipment in a shipyard environment. Use theoretical practices of the trade to repair faulty electrical equipment or systems on nuclear ships. Operate power tools (pipe benders, cutters, power drills) to cut, bend, fit, and thread components of electrical equipment and systems. Use hand tools and test equipment to check alignment, output, or resistance to ground and other electrical characteristics. Diagnose faulty electrical equipment or systems to determine rework or replacement of faulty components on nuclear ship alterations and repairs. Requirements Must be a U.S. citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. Must successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Within the Department of Defense, appointment of retired military members within 180 days after retirement is subject to specific provisions. Born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service. This may be a bargaining unit position. May be required to successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination. Required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance before duty; failure to maintain clearance may result in withdrawal of offer or removal. Work is performed where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, chemicals); may require medical surveillance programs. May be required to wear personal protective equipment continuously for the duration of the work shift. May require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS, including remote or isolated sites; must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods. May require uncommon tour, nights, weekends, holidays; overtime or differential pay may be required. May be a drug testing position; successful completion of a pre‑employment drug test is required. Failure to report to drug test appointment or fail test will rescind tentative offer. May require exposure to high noise levels. Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, applicants must show through experience and training that they possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level applied for. Emphasis is on quality of experience, not length of time. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the job elements and screen‑out elements. The job has a screen‑out element: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE. Applicants must receive at least two points on the screen‑out element(s) to be eligible.
