Description: The Medical Laboratory Scientist is responsible for a wide range of laboratory testing and testing interpretation. The position requires the ability to take assigned responsibility for quality control, instrument maintenance, instrument and department-related special studies, regulatory compliance, and inventory management. The role includes providing training and delegated competency assessment for assigned staff. Moderate independent judgment, critical thinking, and interpretation skills are essential. A high degree of accuracy is required in this position. The Medical Laboratory Scientist possesses a broad educational knowledge of laboratory theory and concepts. Responsibilities include performing, analyzing, interpreting, and results reporting for assigned tests. Ensuring sample quality and criteria before testing is necessary. The scientist will prioritize and coordinate testing workflow and follow-up based on priority. Timely notification of caregivers regarding delays, specimen integrity issues, and critical values is required. Providing timely customer follow-up and resolution is essential. Additional duties may include phlebotomy. Analysis, interpretation, review, and troubleshooting of quality control materials before testing are required. The role also involves analyzing, interpreting, reviewing, and troubleshooting special studies, such as calibrations, correlations, validations, verifications, precision, analytical ranges, and clinical ranges. The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform troubleshooting and required instrument maintenance as needed. Participation in activities that support the Laboratory Information System and software updates is expected. Providing training to new hires or other staff members as assigned is a responsibility of this position. Completing self-competency assessments and participating in peer assessments is required. The scientist will assist in updating training and competency documents as necessary. Participation in the laboratory's quality improvement processes is expected, including scorecard objectives. Participation in survey readiness and document control records maintenance is required. Keeping abreast of revisions to departmental documents is necessary. The Medical Laboratory Scientist must review, document, and complete approved tasks within the Laboratory Information System and quality system, including patient records and other modalities. Participation in proficiency testing rotations according to established policies is required. Notifying appropriate personnel of any related billing or compliance issues is expected. Participation in assigned committees throughout the organization is required. Assisting with supply inventory management, which may include ordering and rotating stock items, is part of the responsibilities. Participation in required organizational inventory control and inventory audits is also expected.
