Director of Risk Management

Kings County Hospital Center has a rich legacy for its pioneering role in medicine. Duties & Responsibilities

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Risk Management & Incident Investigation
  • Process Management: Develops and manages the comprehensive risk management process, including incidents related to quality, safety, and asset loss.
  • Data Collection & Analysis: Spearheads the collection and analysis of information (including VOICE data) to identify organizational trends, frequencies, and root causes of adverse events, accidents, medical errors, and claims.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Investigates NYPORTS cases and sentinel events; prepares case summaries, conducts interviews, and leads debriefings and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) meetings to implement systemic solutions.
Legal, Regulatory & Compliance
  • Liaison & Consultation: Acts as the liaison to attorneys, individuals, and H+H corporate entities. Provides consultation and direction to medical and administrative staff on legal issues, hospital policies, medico-legal matters, and malpractice litigation.
  • Regulatory Reporting: Reviews incident reports and oversees mandatory reporting requirements to external regulatory and accrediting bodies, including NYPORTS, DOH, DOHMH, CMS, and TJC.
  • Policy & Procedures: Versed in policy development and writing. Defines departmental objectives to influence, formulate, and reinforce compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County wide, departmental, and unit-specific policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Confidentiality: Strict adherence to patient rights and confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA standards.
Departmental Leadership & Management
  • Operations & Staffing: Prepares staffing plans, manages schedules, assists with performance appraisals, and makes hiring decisions.
  • Priority & Project Management: Demonstrates excellent planning and organizational skills. Able to handle multiple complex priorities, set timelines, and manage project success measures according to institutional demand.
  • Staff Development: Provides training on regulations and leads, teaches, and conveys complex information understandably across all levels of the organization.
  • Quality Optimization: Develops, implements, and optimizes programs to enhance patient care, ensuring safe, high-quality, and effective healthcare delivery.
  • Executive Support: Performs other activities as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Minimum Qualifications
1. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Risk Management, Health Administration,
Business Administration or in a related health care specialization, and three (3) years of experience in risk
management, control, and prevention, leading and implementing quality and risk management programs,
managing and analyzing risk data, and performing other functions related to risk management in a hospital or
a health care setting, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or
supervisory capacity; or
2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fields, as described in "1" above, and four (4)
years of risk management experience, as described in "1" above, two (2) years of which must have been in
a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
3. Bachelor's degree in the disciplines as described in "1" above; and two (2) years of clinical, patient care or
equivalent experience in a hospital or health care setting, plus two (2) years of related experience, as listed in
"1" above, one (1) year of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory
capacity; or
4. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and/or experience. Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk
Management (CPHRM) or current license and registration to practice as a Professional Nurse, Nurse
Practitioner or other similar clinical designation, may be substituted for one (1) year of experience, however,
all incumbents must have at least a bachelor's degree and one (1) year of responsible administrative,
managerial or supervisory experience, as described in "1" above.
