Description Of Work

This position focuses on maintaining, inspecting, and repairing many types of vehicles and construction equipment used in daily transportation work. You will help ensure safe, reliable operation across the county. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Repair: Perform repairs and overhauls on vehicles, construction machinery, and related components
  • Preventative Maintenance: Carry out scheduled maintenance, diagnostics, and adjustments to keep equipment operating safely
  • State Inspections: Conduct official safety and emissions inspections and complete all required documentation
  • Problem Identification: Use diagnostic tools to find equipment issues and determine proper repair methods
  • Safety Practices: Maintain a clean work area and follow procedures that reduce hazards and prevent injuries
  • Field Support: Make minor adjustments and demonstrate repair techniques to assist other staff members

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Travel, overtime, and shift work required. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $55,492 (before taxes).

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility

Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This positions require possession of an active Pennsylvania Class B Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed, or equivalent.
  • This position requires employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations on the first day of employment.
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class 1, Class 4, or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification during the probationary period.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) on the first day of employment.

Additional Requirements:

  • Employees may be required to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
