The University's main campus is spread across more than 2,000 acres and includes over 500 buildings comprising more than 8 million square feet. The department oversees operating budgets of over $60 million, manages a project portfolio of approximately $990 million, and employs over 400 full-time staff to carry out the duties necessary for campus development and operation.\n\nMore information can be found at: SUMMARY\n\nUnder the direction of the Fleet Services Technical Staff Supervisor, the Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician maintains and repairs heavy-duty vehicles and equipment. The incumbent inspects, maintains, repairs, diagnoses, adjusts, and replaces mechanical and electrical components on University-owned vehicles and equipment, including passenger sedans, light-duty trucks, vans (both passenger and cargo), medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks, fire and police vehicles, passenger transport buses, tractors and landscape maintenance equipment, street sweepers, standby generators (1-kw to 150-kw), and other vehicles and equipment used in the day to day operations of the University. \n\nSystems and sub-systems maintained and repaired include engine, transmission, ignition, fuel delivery, charging and starting, exhaust, electrical, drivetrain, braking (both hydraulic and air-actuated), air comfort, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems. The Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician also performs fabrication and welding, operates and maintains shop tools and equipment, and documents work performed. Additional duties include TIG, MIG, arc, and fuel/gas welding, cutting, burning, and shearing of various metals, including steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast aluminum.\n\nAPPOINTMENT INFORMATION\n\nBudgeted Salary: $42.70 - $53.12/hour. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.\n\nBenefits Level Eligibility: Full benefits\n\nSchedule Information:\n\n Full-time, Fixed\n Percentage of Time: 100%, 40 Hours per Week\n Days of the Week: Mon-Fri\n Shift Includes: Day\n\nEmployee Classification: Career appointment \n\nJob End Date: None\n\nWork Location: UC Santa Cruz Main Campus\n\nUnion Representation: SX, Service Unit\n\nJob Code Classification: HVY DUTY EQUIP TCHN (008476)\n\nTravel: Up to 50% of the time between campus sites\n\nJOB DUTIES\n\n65% - Maintenance/Repair/Metal Fabrication\n\n Performs or assists other technicians in major repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, including major system overhauls.\n Maintains and repairs emission control systems to ensure conformity to all local, state, and federal emission regulations.\n Performs maintenance and repair to vehicles and equipment operating on gasoline, diesel motor fuel, propane, compressed natural gas, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment.\n Reads and interprets basic blueprints and executes metal fabrication projects as directed.\n Drives the vehicles that are being repaired.\n\n15% - Diagnosis\n\n Inspects automotive and heavy equipment to determine corrective action necessary.\n Performs drivability diagnosis of computer-controlled systems.\n Performs repairs in the most cost-efficient manner possible.\n\n10% - Equipment Operation\n\n Operates vehicles and equipment during the course of maintenance and repair.\n Utilizes engine analyzers and emission analyzers.\n Operates shop tools and equipment.\n Operates welding and fabrication equipment.\n\n10% - Record Keeping\n\n Prepares maintenance and repair records.\n Prepares work orders that accurately reflect time and materials used in the course of repairs.\n\nREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS\n\n Journeyman-level experience and skill in automotive heavy vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.\n Experience in the operation and maintenance of tools and special tools used in the course of performing job duties.\n Ability to perform welding and fabrication operations required in the course of performing job duties.\n Knowledge in the proper use and operation of diagnostic equipment used in the course of performing job duties.\n Ability to properly inspect vehicles and equipment for needed maintenance and repairs, and to perform those maintenance and repair operations.\n Ability to safely operate University-owned vehicles and equipment.\n Ability to work both individually and cooperatively with others with minimal or no supervision.\n Ability to identify and correct hazardous conditions and to exercise good judgment when to report unsafe and hazardous conditions.\n Ability to prioritize work assignments to meet deadlines, flexibility to work with changing workloads and deadlines, good customer service skills, and the ability to work with interruptions.\n Good interpersonal skills to effectively interact with coworkers and the ability to exercise diplomacy in dealing with diverse groups of people.\n\nPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS\n\n Demonstrated experience completing advanced welding and fabrication projects such as TIG, MIG, Arc, and Fuel/Gas welding, cutting, burning, and shearing of various metals, including but not limited to steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and cast aluminum.\n\nSPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT\n\n Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.\n Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.\n Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.\n Must possess, or obtain within 6 months of hire, a valid California Class B license to drive and participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.\n Must participate in the DOT Drug Testing Program.\n Ability to do occasional work in confined spaces such as attics and trenches while bending, stooping and/or kneeling with the possibility of being exposed to live electrical circuits and machinery.\n Ability to safely lift parts, components, and supplies while bending, kneeling, or stooping with or without accommodation.\n Ability to safely push and move equipment weighing up to 160 pounds with or without accommodation.\n Employees whose positions are designated as Category 1 or Category 2 for occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIM) must receive the Hepatitis B vaccination or sign a Hepatitis B vaccination declination statement. Initial and annual Bloodborne Pathogens training is also required.\n Ability to occasionally work overtime with little or no advance notice, and work on-call to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary for emergency repairs.\n Ability to work shift work, 6:00AM to 2:30PM.\n Ability to work overtime including evenings, nights, weekends and holidays to meet operational needs, and work an alternate work schedule shift as required.\n Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.\n The University of California has implemented a Vaccination Policy covering all employees.
