Nursing Assistant - Emergency Department

Summary Emergency Department Nursing Assistant position is assigned to Tennessee Valley Healthcare System – Nashville, TN campus. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English per VA Handbook 5005 – part II – chapter 3 – section A – paragraph 3j. Experience or Education or Training: One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS‑4 level demonstrating knowledge, skills, and abilities directly related to the specific assignment. Professional KSAs (GS‑5): Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long‑term care, or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse. Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team, and other personnel. Serve as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with orientation and assessment during clinical rotation. Recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance (e.g., basic life support, controlling bleeding, behavior crisis). Preferred Experience: Two years of acute care experience and/or nursing assistant certification. Physical Requirements: Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, and manual dexterity. Ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, and push, and to transfer Veterans and objects. Duties Participate in implementing the healthcare plan by performing tasks delegated by and performed under supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse. Perform full range of nursing procedures utilizing appropriate and safe techniques. Responsible for reprocessing and cleaning of reusable medical equipment items on the assigned unit. Provide appropriate verbal information and written facts as part of a patient‑driven holistic care plan for life. Assure appropriate/safe use of equipment and supplies. Follow principles of infection control and safety for a wide range of conditions, including standard precautions and reporting environmental safety hazards. Recognize urgent/emergent situations and follow guidelines and emergency preparedness plan. Provide activities of daily living to a group of patients. Provide technical support to the unit staff. Orient, coach, and educate staff and students. Provide monitoring for patients that require close and continuous observation using AvaSure Telesitter technology. Compensation & Benefits Pay: Competitive salary and regular salary increases; higher step rate may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA. Work Schedule: Based on the needs of the Service (Allied Health Professional Pay Schedule: V785). Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time off per year (13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment, up to 12 weeks paid parental leave for birth, adoption, or foster care placement. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of eligible childcare costs, with a monthly maximum of $416.66.
