Cardiac Anesthesiologist

The Cardiac Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing comprehensive anesthesia care to patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic, vascular, and structural heart procedures. This physician collaborates closely with surgeons, cardiologists, perfusionists, CRNAs, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality perioperative care. The role includes preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic management, advanced hemodynamic monitoring, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), postoperative patient management, and participation in quality improvement and education initiatives. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive pre-anesthesia evaluations and develop individualized anesthetic care plans. Administer general anesthesia and monitor patients throughout cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures. Perform advanced invasive monitoring, including arterial lines, central venous catheters, and pulmonary artery catheters, as clinically indicated. Utilize and interpret intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) to guide patient management. Manage patients undergoing: Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) Valve repair and replacement Aortic surgery Structural heart procedures (e.g., TAVR, MitraClip) Thoracic surgical procedures Coordinate anesthetic management during cardiopulmonary bypass with perfusionists and surgical teams. Manage complex hemodynamic instability using vasoactive medications, mechanical circulatory support, and advanced monitoring techniques. Provide postoperative care and safe handoff to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). Supervise and collaborate with Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), anesthesia residents, fellows, and medical students, as applicable. Participate in on-call coverage for cardiac and emergent surgical cases. Maintain accurate and timely medical documentation. Participate in heart team meetings, departmental quality improvement, patient safety initiatives, and continuing medical education. Support research, teaching, and academic activities when applicable. Qualifications Required Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Completion of an ACGME-accredited Anesthesiology Residency. Completion of a Cardiothoracic/Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship. Board Certified or Board Eligible in Anesthesiology. Eligibility for unrestricted state medical licensure. Certification or eligibility in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography (National Board of Echocardiography), if required by the institution. Current ACLS certification. Preferred Fellowship training in Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. Advanced TEE certification. Experience with mechanical circulatory support devices (ECMO, Impella, etc). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Expertise in cardiac physiology and complex anesthetic management. Advanced knowledge of cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal circulation. Proficiency in invasive monitoring and echocardiography. Excellent critical thinking and decision-making skills. Strong communication and teamwork abilities. Ability to perform effectively in high-acuity, fast-paced environments. Commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.
