Substitute Bus Driver

JOB TITLE: SubstituteBus Driver

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor

POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the safe transportation of students to and from schools and in various other district activities on an as-needed basis. Provides substitute transportation coverage when regular bus drivers are absent or additional transportation services are required. Develops and promotes good community relations among school and community clientele.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Performs pre- and post-trip safety inspections and reports any safety or mechanical concerns in accordance with district procedures.
• Drives assigned routes and transports students safely to and from school and authorized district activities.
• Discharges students only at authorized stops and follows established routes, schedules, and transportation procedures.
• Instructs passengers on safety procedures and participates in required emergency and fire-drill procedures.
• Maintains order and appropriate student conduct on the bus and reports significant disciplinary or safety concerns to the Transportation Supervisor.
• Provides transportation for field trips and other district activities as assigned.
• Follows all applicable laws, regulations, district policies, transportation procedures, and safety requirements.
• Communicates professionally and appropriately with students, families, school staff, transportation staff, and members of the community.
• Accepts substitute assignments and works flexible schedules based on district transportation needs.
• Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum Education or Formal Training: High school graduate preferred/required consistent with district requirements.

Minimum Experience: No prior bus driver experience required.

Age Requirement: Must be 21 years of age.

License or Certification: Must have, or be able to obtain as required by the District, a valid CDL Class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements in good standing. Must meet all applicable Colorado requirements for operating a school bus.

ESSENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

Some dust and dirt, fumes and odors, noise, temperature extremes, and potentially hazardous situations.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant fine finger dexterity; and the ability to sit, walk, and stand. This job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment.
• Occasional lifting of 5 to over 50 pounds.
• Constant sitting.
• Frequent reaching.
• Occasional standing, walking, squatting, stooping, and climbing.

CLEARANCES:

Must clear background check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the FBI through fingerprint submission, as required by the District.

SALARY:

Substitute Bus Drivers are paid on an hourly basis according to the applicable Transportation Personnel Salary Schedule. This position is classified non-exempt and is an at-will position with the Sheridan School District.

BENEFITS:

This is an as-needed substitute position. Eligibility for benefits, leave, and retirement participation is determined in accordance with District policy, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and state and federal law.
