Senior Social Worker - HUD-VASH

Summary The HUD-VASH Senior Social Worker incumbent functions as an independent social work provider, offering clinical interventions to homeless Veterans to assist them in obtaining and maintaining permanent housing. Responsibilities Conduct psychosocial assessments and interviews with Veterans to establish facts about the Veteran’s situation, presenting problems, and impact on functioning and health. Interpret and explain VA treatment and benefit programs. Review referral data from social workers, case managers, managed care staff, and discharge planners to identify patients’ needs. Make clinical assessments identifying the Veteran’s needs and strengths. Provide care to Veterans experiencing severe crises, lacking family or community support, or possessing significant deficits in coping skills. Independently evaluate the Veteran’s situation, including reactions and coping abilities, and arrive at reasonable conclusions. Make psychosocial diagnoses based on assessment, professional judgment, and advanced practice skills. Assess at-risk factors and develop a preliminary disposition plan involving the Veteran and significant others. Perform insightful assessment of serious and complicated cases, including psychiatric, medical, dementia, and other high‑risk diagnoses. Make independent professional decisions and recommend agency actions. Determine suitable treatment options on an inpatient or outpatient basis to help Veterans manage stressful situations. Qualifications Demonstrated experience showing possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. At least two years of experience in an area of specialized social work practice. Licensed or certified by a state in a specialized social work practice area. Licensed or certified at the advanced practice level (e.g., ASWB advanced generalist or clinical exam) or grandfathered to practice at that level. Certification or post‑master training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university, including a defined curriculum, course of study, and supervised experience in a specialty. Work Schedule & Benefits Full‑time, Monday‑Friday, 07:30‑16:00. Competitive salary with regular increases. Paid time off: 37‑50 days of annual paid time per year (13‑26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays). Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual based on prior work or military experience. Parental leave: up to 12 weeks of paid leave after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster care placement. Child care subsidy: eligible full‑time employees with a family income below $144,000 may receive a subsidy up to 25% of childcare costs (max $416.66/month). Retirement: traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contribution by the VA.
