Job Description TBPELS is a small, dynamic state agency offering merit raises based on performance. Location Primary location: Texas-Austin. Work location: Main Office (460-1000) 1917 S IH 35 Austin 78741-3702. Responsibilities Review applications for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors in Texas. Perform detailed technical reviews of education, experience, and examination qualifications. Make sound recommendations to management and the board regarding applicant qualifications for exams, exam waivers, and licensure. Manage filing, email, phone, fax requests; perform quality control auditing of scanned confidential documents; conduct outreach presentations; develop application processing improvements. Adhere to departmental customer response deadlines while providing excellent customer service. Perform related duties as assigned. Hours of employment: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Hours may vary based on business needs and departmental policies for alternative work schedules. Eligible for telecommuting some percentage of the work week, but team members may be required to come into the office for scheduled meetings and unscheduled requests with 72-hour notice. Teleworking requires a secure workspace with reliable internet and availability for weekly meetings and collaboration via Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and other applications during regular business hours. The Engineering Specialist will be interviewed and selected by the Director of Licensing and Executive Director and reports directly to the Director of Licensing. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with an engineering degree. Engineer II: four years of experience with planning, organizing, and coordinating projects and activities; applying engineering concepts in technical reviews. Engineer III: six years of experience with planning, organizing, and coordinating projects and activities; applying engineering concepts in technical reviews. Preferred Qualifications Advanced education may substitute for experience. Experience with data entry, maintaining and updating confidential records through the use of an internal database. Demonstrated leadership skills of both teams and projects. License/Certifications Valid Texas (or state of residency) driver’s license. Twenty percent travel may be necessary. Texas Professional Engineer license or ability to attain designation within one year of employment. The engineering specialist should possess: Ability to interpret and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures governing regulatory programs. Ability to read, interpret, compose correspondences, reports, policies and procedures. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and other related software. Ability to establish and maintain a professional working relationship with peers. Ability to handle high‑level information confidentially; advanced organization skills with strong attention to detail. Physical Requirements Work environment is non‑smoking. Duties require extended periods at a computer, with telephone, printer noise, moderately high noise levels. Mostly sedentary but may involve walking, standing, pulling, pushing, kneeling, stooping and bending; fine motor skills; safe lifting up to 30 pounds.
