Assistant Camp Director - 4-H Camp Owahta - McGraw, NY

Position Overview The Assistant Camp Director at 4-H Camp Owahta, a 128‑acre camp in McGraw, NY, leads staff, creates safe and engaging experiences for campers, and oversees daily operations and safety. The role is a full‑time exempt position for the summer of 2026. Compensation Summer salary: $3,600.00 to $4,800.00, commensurate with experience. Responsibilities Assist the Outdoor Recreation Director and Day Camp Director with staff training development and facilitation. Design, deliver, and evaluate summer camp programs that meet the needs and interests of campers and parents. Manage daily camp operations, including supervision of campers and staff, and enforcement of camp policies and procedures. Serve as the primary point of contact for emergencies and medical or mental‑health crises involving campers or staff. Conduct and supervise staff scheduling, break times, and staff‑to‑camper ratios. Support camper behavior management, conflict mediation, and personal development. Assist with weekly paperwork (registration, sign‑ins, permits, evaluations, surveys) and maintenance of required records and logs. Maintain American Camp Association accreditation and camp compliance with Department of Health and ACA standards. Support and facilitate 4‑H Leader‑in‑Training (LIT) and Counselor‑in‑Training (CIT) programs, including lesson‑plan writing and program evaluation. Attend 4‑H Camp Owahta staff training week (June22–July32026) and participate in all scheduled training events. Develop and pursue a professional development plan in collaboration with the Outdoor Recreation Director. Qualifications Must be at least 21 years of age. Bachelor’s Degree. Minimum six months of leadership experience in a summer camp setting (e.g., Program Director, Lifeguard, Senior Counselor) or equivalent experience in an outdoor program or classroom setting for youth ages5‑16. Ability to build positive, approachable relationships with youth, parents, and staff. Willingness to work and live on‑site at 4-H Camp Owahta, McGraw, NY, for the entire season (July5–August142026). Flexibility to work evenings and weekends. Knowledge of positive youth development principles. Demonstrated good character and integrity in professional settings. Current CPR and First Aid certification from courses approved by the NYS Department of Health (preferred). Experience as a staff member at an overnight summer camp (preferred). Interest in working with youth and young adults, primarily outdoors (preferred). Ability to teach skills to staff and campers ages5‑16 and adapt to dynamic environments (preferred). Demonstrated resilience and sound judgment during challenging situations (preferred). Additional Information Full‑time exempt, 100% FTE. No sponsorship for employment visa status is available.
