RN - Labor/Delivery (L&D)

Registered Nurse (RN) - Float

This float position operates within a unit that consists of 15 beds, including 7 Labor & Delivery and 8 Postpartum beds, along with 1 operating room suite designated for C-Sections. The unit supports an average of 58 births per month.

Certifications Required

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• Preferred: ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• Preferred: NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program)
• Preferred: STABLE (Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support)

Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist in the care of obstetric and neonatal patients, including those with diagnoses such as hypertension and gestational diabetes.
• Monitor and interpret fetal heart strips and titrate drips, including Pitocin, insulin, and magnesium.
• Provide couplet care with a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1 for patients on Pitocin, magnesium, or insulin drips and 1:3 for couplet care.
• Float to Medsurg and ER units as required based on staffing needs.
• Collaborate with charge nurses and assist with patient care assignments.
• Complete vital signs and assist with patient transfers and ambulation as needed.

Skills and Experience

• Ability to read and interpret fetal heart monitoring strips accurately.
• Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to follow quality metrics.
• Prior travel nursing experience is preferred.

Work Environment

Care is provided in an acute care setting. Registered Nurses are expected to handle responsibilities effectively within a dynamic and changing environment.

Schedule and Orientation

• Shifts: 0645-1915 and 1845-0715
• Block scheduling is available; self-scheduling is not permitted.
• Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend.
• Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday.
• Orientation: Three shifts of unit/department-specific orientation will be provided.

Attributes that contribute to success in this role include adaptability to change, effective communication, and strong critical thinking abilities. This position does not involve direct clinical involvement; however, nurses must be prepared to float to other departments as needed.
