- The Referral Representative I is responsible for processing specimens, coordinating referral testing activities, supporting client inquiries, reporting laboratory results, and ensuring compliance with laboratory quality, safety, and regulatory standards.
- This role requires strong attention to detail, customer service skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced clinical laboratory environment.
- Minimum one to two years of clinical laboratory experience.
- Customer service and/or medical background preferred.
- Retrieve, sort, and process specimens for shipment to referral laboratories.
- Ensure specimen quality and accuracy by identifying issues such as incorrect specimen types, missing information, improper temperature conditions, and insufficient quantities.
- Prepare specimens and packages for shipment in accordance with applicable transportation regulations.
- Maintain and file departmental documentation.
- Handle customer inquiries regarding test results, service issues, and quality concerns.
- Report laboratory results using established protocols.
- Contact clients to resolve routine or technical matters related to patient testing and result reporting.
- Perform investigations and provide resolution for complex referral testing issues.
- Research test availability and identify appropriate referral testing vendors.
- Assist client services, customers, and sales teams by responding to questions and concerns in a timely manner.
- Communicate tests not performed and laboratory incidents to clients and document all communications thoroughly.
- Identify and escalate reportable quality incidents to supervisors.
- Maintain a safe, functional, and sanitary work environment.
- Adhere to laboratory safety, privacy, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Utilize personal protective equipment and follow established safety procedures.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of client services and specimen processing operations.
- Thorough understanding of referral testing processes.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology applicable to clinical laboratory environments.
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods.
- Ability to handle biological samples and potentially hazardous chemicals.
