Police Recruit

Job Overview Durham Police Department is seeking recruits for the Academy beginning in Fall of 2026. Successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) academy and all three phases of field training qualifies candidates for a $10,000 hiring incentive and educational incentive bonuses. Candidates holding an associate’s degree receive a 2.5% pay increase; those with a bachelor’s degree or higher receive a 5% increase, activated upon promotion to Police Officer. Responsibilities Conduct traffic operations, enforce North Carolina traffic laws, perform routine and high‑risk traffic stops, investigate traffic accidents, and direct traffic. Execute investigations, complete police documentation for reportable crimes, interview and interrogate subjects, and uphold knowledge of search and seizure laws. Manage prisoner operations: conduct searches, handcuff prisoners, transport, and process them at the police station. Use communication systems via mobile and portable radios, and make telephone calls for report and follow‑up. Perform tactical police operations as part of search teams, conduct searches of buildings, vehicles, and outdoor areas, and patrol areas on foot and in vehicles. Complete administrative duties: record paperwork, document activities, coordinate media relations, serve on committees, maintain equipment and vehicles, and help organize special events. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of vocations or technical training obtained with six‑month to one‑year advanced study or training beyond high school equivalency. Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Training. Valid, unrestricted North Carolina driver’s license, or ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire. High school diploma or equivalency; college transcripts required. At least 20 years of age upon completion of classroom training. Pass vision, hearing, and other physical requirements. Meet credit standards. No felony convictions, no serious misdemeanors in the past five years, no domestic violence convictions, and no DUI/DWI convictions in the last five years. No suspended driving privileges in the last three years and limited moving‑violation convictions as specified. No illegal drug use within the past 12 months. Pass a written examination, physical test, background investigation, credit check, criminal history check, drug screen, psychological and medical examinations, and polygraph. Military personnel must have an honorable discharge. Must be a U.S. citizen or naturalized citizen. This position is classified as Group 1 (Critical to emergency operations).
