Position Summary The Dean of Students serves as a liaison between administration, school staff, students, families, and community agencies that support students. The principal objective of the Dean of Students role is to function as a student behavior management specialist who is committed to working both proactively and responsively on student behavior and attendance issues to support the creation and maintenance of a safe, supportive climate focused on learning and success for all students. In addition, the Dean will provide leadership related to models of intervention for all students as well as direct intervention for specific students. Qualifications A Master’s degree from an accredited program in educational leadership (licensure as a Principal or other administrator position) is preferred. Licensure from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction with at least 5 years of successful experience in an educational setting (licensure as a 1st to 8th Grade Teacher) is required. Prior relevant experience may be considered in certain instances. Due to travel across educational settings, a valid Wisconsin driver’s license is required. Bilingual skills - Spanish/English preferred. Essential Functions Assessment Interprets assessment data to determine appropriate interventions for academic needs. Assists teams in completing functional behavioral assessments and risk assessments. Knows the laws and regulations related to the implementation of IDEA in evaluation. Uses data and defined performance criteria to identify students not meeting proficiency criteria in academic and/or behavioral areas. Learning Supports and Plans Works with at-risk administrative leadership in developing and supporting alternative education models and interventions. Can assist in the development of behavioral interventions appropriate to the type and severity of needs presented. Assists teams in connecting evaluation, the present level of functional educational performance, goals, and outcomes. Assists in providing interventions related to AOTDA issues including referrals for assessment, addressing related behavioral and academic issues, and supporting linkages to other agencies. Accesses resources for teams to utilize in addressing specific situations. Follows laws and regulations regarding student behavioral intervention and can provide leadership to assist teams in addressing these issues. Knows the laws and regulations related to the implementation of IDEA in programming and service delivery. Assists in the coordination of student attendance policies and procedures. Provides direct intervention in resolving behavioral events or issues within the school environment including application of behavioral consequences, code of conduct application, crisis intervention, etc. Team Collaboration Establishes and maintains relationships with students and families to promote common understandings. Serves as LEA representative at IEP meetings with parents, community members, and instructional teams. Collaborates with pupil services teams to develop support for the social, emotional, health, and safety needs of students. Facilitates resolution of issues or differences amongst team members. Leads or facilitates discussions regarding appropriate options for intervention plans for specific students. Works collaboratively with teachers to develop instructional or support strategies for specific students. Uses data, and implements strategies to proactively address systems barriers as well as individual student plans. Articulates methods and practices and seeks to implement others that could improve effective partnerships between families, schools, and/or community agencies or members. Promotes a multi-tiered intervention system within a professional learning community. Works with administration and other leadership in scheduling and resource management. Universal Learning Community Supports With principal and associate principal share the responsibility for ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of students. Demonstrates knowledge regarding factors impacting student learning including second language acquisition, poverty, transience, etc. Assists schools in developing intervention alternatives based on a multi-tiered intervention model. Assists building leadership in developing professional development opportunities based on building needs. Demonstrates willingness to learn within the building learning community. Assists schools in accessing technology to aid in data collection, analysis, and progress monitoring. Organizes celebrations of diversity in the community as well as educational environments. Develops and provides training that addresses the needs of the diverse student and community populations. Uses data from school and larger community sources to identify barriers for global student populations and develop specific plans to address those barriers. Promotes cultural competence, inclusive practices, tolerance, and respect for diversity in interactions with staff and the school community by example and through staff in-services. Guides staff in meeting fundamental legal obligations under FERPA, OCR, and DPI. Provides supervision and monitoring across school environments as needed. Working Conditions This job is performed primarily inside with the occasional need to go to meetings outside the building and/or to other district buildings. Duties may require operating and/or riding in a vehicle. Duties may require traveling to meetings and work assignments. Duties may require prolonged use of a computer keyboard and monitor. Duties may require working extended hours. Duties may require working under time constraints to meet deadlines. Exposure to adverse weather conditions and seasonal temperature extremes. Potential for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases. Potential for interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
