Position Overview
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Ambulatory Care provides strategic leadership to the medical staff and ambulatory services within our organization. This role is essential in supporting the mission, plans, and objectives aimed at delivering quality and cost-effective care to patients and the community. The CMO advocates for the enhancement of care quality, comprehensive healthcare delivery, patient experience, and safety across all ambulatory settings.
In this capacity, the CMO acts as an internal consultant to executive and physician leaders within the Medical Group and Physician Services division, offering strategic guidance on various aspects such as quality, access, productivity, physician compensation, and engagement. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Developing employed physician networks
- Succession planning
- Accreditation for ambulatory and post-acute care
- Aligning physicians and fostering collaborative models
- Promoting patient-centered care and clinical integration
- Engaging with the Clinical Integration Network (CIN) for operational performance and population health strategies
The CMO will also support system-level and local initiatives aimed at redesigning care models to achieve the triple aim of healthcare for accountable populations. Collaboration with the Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO) on clinical process redesign and leveraging technology, such as TogetherCare (Epic), is also a key aspect of this role. The CMO will engage with physician leaders to drive improvements in clinical quality indicators and outcomes, while serving as a member of the senior management team.
Reporting StructureThis position has a matrix reporting relationship to the CEO of our organization and the Senior Vice President of Medical Groups & Ambulatory. The CMO is expected to network, build consensus, collaborate, and solve problems effectively. A significant part of this role involves implementing strategic and operational plans, particularly focusing on physician relationships and service line development. These initiatives will be executed through established medical staff structures, committees, and collaborative meetings with the executive team.

- Collaborates with senior leadership to expand ambulatory partnerships, focusing on ACO/CIN development and non-acute services.
- Works together to establish and achieve clinical quality goals, including HEDIS measures and patient safety standards.
- Supports the formal medical staff functions at all facilities, potentially chairing committees and serving as a resource for complex medical staff decisions.
- Graduation from an accredited medical school and completion of an accredited residency program in a medical specialty.
- Board certification in the relevant specialty, with a commitment to maintain certification throughout employment.
- A Master's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Ability to navigate a complex matrix-reporting environment.
- A proven leader with at least 15 years of clinical practice experience, including 5 years in a leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in leading quality improvement initiatives and medical staff quality initiatives.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively address quality issues and foster a positive organizational culture.
- Exceptional leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to motivate others to achieve results.
- Advanced interpersonal, management, and organizational skills.
- A personal presence characterized by honesty, integrity, and compassion, inspiring others to uphold the organization's mission and values.

This is a hybrid role, combining part-time CMO responsibilities with a part-time clinical role based on medical specialty. The salary for the CMO portion ranges from $160 to $240 per hour, with expected weekly hours between 16 to 20. Compensation is determined by experience, skills, and education, and is compliant with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
