Agency Department of Public Safety Division 70000075 Dept of Public Safety Job Title Youth Counselor Technician (S) Position Overview This full‑time position requires direct supervision of court‑involved juveniles in Youth Development Centers and Juvenile Detention Centers. Shift work, including weekends and holidays, is required. The role includes physical duties such as restraining juveniles, administering medication, and maintaining a secure environment, as well as supervisory duties and support of the treatment team. Responsibilities Directly monitor and supervise juveniles while housed, at school, and during all daily activities. Maintain a secure environment and ensure compliance with cleanliness and sanitation standards. Provide direct engagement and support to court‑ordered youth, including recreational activities. Complete daily records documenting safety violations, security breaches, crisis interventions, behavioral issues, and youth progress updates. Provide feedback to the treatment team. Participate in training and developmental programs as required for the trainee pathway. Qualifications High school diploma or GED and at least 20 years of age (for trainee). Minimum education for permanent positions: Associate’s degree or a combination of two years of related human services experience and a high school diploma. Physical capability to perform duties and restrain juveniles. Shift work, including weekends and holidays. Applicants for permanent positions must complete the Juvenile Justice Officer Basic Training certification program (four weeks, classroom and physical training, overnight stays). Successful completion of background check, drug screening, psychological test, sexual risk screening, physical exam (vision and hearing), US citizenship, and a valid driver’s license. Step Pay Plan Initial salary ranges by step according to experience, with increases as experience accumulates. Step 0 – $37,621 Step 1 – $40,253 Step 2 – $42,670 Step 3 – $44,803 Step 4 – $46,594 Step 5 – $47,993 Step 6 – $48,953 Minimum Pay for Trainees Minimum starting pay – $34,000 6 months – $34,850 12 months – $35,725 18 months – $36,625 24 months – $37,621 Benefits Full‑time (40 hours per week) with state benefits including paid vacation, paid sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, and health insurance.
