ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Must be able to perform the duties of “Sheriff” as defined in MSS 645.44 and duties of “Peace Officer” as defined by MSS 626.84. This position is responsible for patrolling the activity throughout Chisago County facilities and providing a safe and friendly environment for county employees and members of the public. Candidates selected will provide armed security for the Courts, County facilities, employees, and the general public. Performs other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Associate or Technical degree and moderate experience, or a combination of equivalent education and experience. Must be Minnesota POST licensed or eligible to be licensed. Moderate experience as a full time sworn peace officer. Valid driver’s license in the State of Minnesota.GRADE

2026 - $36.29 to $47.79 DOQ 2027 - $38.87 to $51.19 DOQ Essential Functions Conducts routine patrol of roadways, waterways, parks, trails and cities or areas under contractual agreements for the purposes of protecting people and property by preventing crimes and enforcing statutes and ordinances, involving misdemeanors, felonies, and other law violations, and to otherwise serve and protect the citizens of the county and state. Works an assigned shift using own judgment in deciding course of action being expected to handle difficult and emergency situations without assistance. Conducts initial investigations to include such activities as: collecting evidence, dusting for prints, interviewing suspects, informants, or witnesses, taking photographs of crime scenes, tracking the location of suspects, and other investigative activities. Conducts follow‑up investigations of crimes committed during assigned shift. Seeks out and questions victims, witnesses, and suspects. Develops leads and tips. Search the scene of the crime for clues. Analyzes and evaluates evidence and arrests offenders. Prepares cases for giving testimony and testifies in court proceedings. Compiles evidence and prepares written reports on criminal investigations. Collaborates with other law enforcement agencies to resolve criminal complaints. Reviews evidence and reports with the County Attorney staff to determine the need to collect additional evidence or to process a complaint/warrant. Responds to emergency radio calls and investigates accidents, robberies, civil disturbance, domestic disputes, fights, drunkenness, missing children, prowlers, abuse of drugs, etc. Takes appropriate law enforcement action. Resolves and mediates disputes in citizen’s homes, places of business or other public gathering places. Interrogates suspects, witnesses, and drivers. Preserves evidence. Arrests violators. Investigates and render assistance at scene of vehicular accidents. Summons ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles. Take measurements and draw diagrams of scenes. Investigate deaths and accidents involving trucks, automobiles, motorcycles, airplanes, boats, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, and other motorized vehicles. Prepare technical documentation and/or reports used for formal complaints, prosecution, etc. Evaluates cases based on physical evidence, witness testimony, and suspect statements drawing expert conclusions for prosecution and presentation before the court. Prepares accurate and complete logs, records, and reports relating to the law enforcement activities. Informs supervisor of unusual events and provides updates on the status of on-going investigations or events. Undertakes community‑oriented police work and assists citizens with such matters as locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention. Attend community meetings and answers questions relating to various law enforcement activities and/or programs. Answers citizens’ requests for information including directions, regulations, ordinances and where to obtain additional information. Required to do public speaking on law enforcement topics. Conducts patrol activities including directing traffic, investigation of reported or observed violations of law, and conducting patrol activities. Responsible for crowd control at community events. Coordinates activities with other officers or other county and city departments as needed, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the County Attorney and/or Court Administrator regarding cases, policies, and procedures, as needed and assigned. Attends and completes all required and on‑going training. Keeps up to date on office policies and procedures as well as local ordinances and State and/or Federal law changes and applications. Attend all departmental patrol meetings. Maintains proficiency with all issued weapons, use of force, and first aid. Administers first aid/CPR until medical personnel arrive. Use the AED when needed. Serves warrants of arrest, subpoenas, civil process papers, and other documents. Prepares notices of third‑party levies and sales and executes these functions. Provides a visible presence in the court area and serves as the primary law enforcement officer in the Government Center. Reviews the court schedule and coordinates staff activities to include assigning the work to Bailiffs and volunteers. Coordinates special details with the Court Administrator or designee. Coordinates additional security for high‑risk trials or high‑risk inmates. Conducts inspections of the courts and reviews security procedures at the Government Center. Screen and conduct physical searches of court litigants, defendants, and the public with the use of metal detectors. Monitors and controls the conduct of individuals using County facilities. Escorts and transports prisoners and others to and from court, jail and other jurisdictions or facilities. Maintains custody and security of prisoners during court or while present at other facilities or locations. Patrol and guard courthouse, grand jury rooms, or assigned areas to provide security, enforce laws, maintain order, and arrest violators. Check courtroom for security and cleanliness. Screen, control, and handle evidence and exhibits during court proceedings. Maintain control over people entering and exiting court rooms during proceedings. Announce entrance of judge. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Extensive knowledge of modern methods of patrol, detection, identification, evidence handling reporting, and communications. Demonstrates skill in the use of the tools and equipment listed below. Ability to learn the applicable laws, ordinances, and department rules and regulations; Ability to perform work requiring good physical condition; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers and supervisors; Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions; Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; Ability to meet the special requirements listed below; working knowledge of Chisago County’s geography. Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid State Driver’s License without record of suspension or revocation in any state; Must be able to pass medical exam and the Department’s physical agility test and written test; Ability to meet Department’s physical standards; Basic law enforcement training certification or equivalent. Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of employment; No felony convictions; must read and write the English language. Must have good judgment and character; ability to meet and treat the public courteously, tactfully, and firmly; accurate, legible compilation and preparation or dictation of reports. Ability to report to work on a regular and timely basis. Must be knowledgeable in the Minnesota and US constitution and court cases surrounding these constitutions. Must successfully qualify with a handgun and other department weapons according to existing department qualification standards. Tools and Equipment Used Authorized emergency vehicle, radio, radar, LIDAR, handgun and other weapons as required, TASER, Asp baton, handcuffs, intoxillizer, PBT, first aid equipment, personal computer, including word processing software, boats, snowmobiles, all‑terrain vehicles, personal watercraft, police related safety and specialized equipment. Working Conditions This classification frequently involves physical agility requirements such as climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, repetitive motions, and manual dexterity. Sensory requirements include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; and hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communication and/or to make fine distinctions in sound. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places; and with explosives and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration. Exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, and elevated noise levels are part of the work conditions on a regular basis. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
