Title Custodian Location/Department Buildings & Grounds Reports To Building Administrator and Director of Buildings and Grounds FLSA Status Non-Exempt Terms of Employment 12 month employee Salary Range $33.42 Summary The School Custodian is responsible for providing a clean, safe and orderly learning environment for students, staff and visitors. The position performs routine cleaning to assigned areas, basic maintenance and ensures compliance with district safety and sanitation standards. The custodian will work with Building administration and maintenance staff to ensure the timely reporting of building maintenance issues. Qualifications Education : High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required License : Must have a valid Illinois Operator's License or Valid Illinois I.D. Experience : Two years prior job‑related experience in school or institutional building maintenance or related trade preferred. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Arrange furnishings and equipment for meetings, classroom activities and events (e.g., regular school, community, special events, set up and break down tables, chairs, audio‑visual equipment as directed). Cleans school facilities, administrative service center, transportation hub, and other areas (classrooms, offices, multipurpose rooms, grounds, windows, restrooms, sinks, carpets, floors, garbage cans, gym, cafeteria, etc.) using a variety of custodial equipment and products. Delivers items such as supplies, mail, packages, and furniture to appropriate parties. Informs Building Administrator, Immediate Supervisor, site personnel and students regarding activities, safety, and facility maintenance. Requests equipment and supplies through Building Administrator and Immediate Supervisor to maintain inventory and ensure availability. Rotates between buildings as needed to provide adequate coverage during staff absences. Reports needed repairs to Building Administrator/Immediate Supervisor. Maintains grounds and operates equipment as required. Visually checks fire/security alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting systems for damage or operational problems. Secures facilities and grounds to minimize property damage, loss, and liability (e.g., unlocking & locking doors, securing gates, checking windows, turning lights off/on, operating heating plant and equipment). Assists other personnel as required to support their work activities. Groundskeepers should maintain grounds and operate equipment, rotate in absence of a custodian, and perform daily tasks of the absent custodian. Removes ice and snow on school property when required. Performs routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs, reporting repairs to Building Administrator/Immediate Supervisor. Sets up and breaks down tables and chairs for school and community events. Assists with the transport of audio‑visual equipment as directed. Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the District. Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies. Demonstrates a regular and routine attendance to avoid disruption to district operations. Performs other duties as assigned by Building Administrator and Immediate Supervisor. Works outside and inside in hot and cold temperatures, and may be exposed to dust, toxic chemicals, and material when provided with appropriate protective equipment. Manages slippery or uneven walking surfaces; works on ladders with assistance per OSHA standards; works mostly alone in individual areas. Physical Factors Stand/Walk between 6–8 hours each shift. Repetitive hand usage. Drive between 1–3 hours per shift as requested. Single grasping, pushing and pulling. Fine manipulation. Repetitive foot motion. Squat frequently. Lift up to 25 lbs individually, occasional lifts of 75 lbs with assistance. Sedentary periods with occasional standing/walking.
