ATR Fitter 1st Class
$98.26k - $103.77kIdaho National Laboratory
Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fitter to work on our Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Maintenance team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located out of our ATR facility with every Friday off. You will perform maintenance and installation of piping, tubing systems, and components.
The Work Matters Here:
The Advanced Test Reactor at Idaho National Laboratory is one of the most unique and consequential facilities in the world. As the nation's most powerful research reactor, ATR drives breakthroughs in nuclear fuel development, materials science, and national security—work that directly shapes America's energy independence and defense capability.
The systems that keep ATR operating do not maintain themselves. That is where you come in.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
- Perform layout, fit-up, and fabrication of piping systems in accordance with engineering drawings, isometrics, and specifications and maintain compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME B31.1, B31.3) for piping fabrication and installation.
- Read and interpret blueprints, piping isometrics, and P&IDs to determine fit-up requirements and material needs.
- Fit and align pipe, fittings, flanges, and supports to meet precise tolerance and alignment requirements prior to welding.
- Fabricate and install pipe spools, supports, and hangers for new installations and modifications.
- Perform field measurements and layout for piping runs, ensuring proper slope, alignment, and clearance.
- Select and prepare materials, including cutting, beveling, and threading pipe as required.
- Perform pressure testing, inspection, and quality checks on completed piping systems.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain mechanical/piping and tubing systems and their components.
- Operate shop equipment, test jigs, and use piping/tubing installation/repair/maintenance tools, as well as basic hand and power tools.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain high-pressure/hazardous material and waste systems.
- Inspect, troubleshoot, repair, install, and maintain fire systems, fire hydrants, fire protection fluid systems, air dryers, and heat exchangers.
- Couple and align mechanical/piping, tubing systems, and components.
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on piping and tubing systems and components.
- Read and interpret drawings and sketches proficiently.
- Review scope with customers to define job requirements, offer recommendations for improving product outcomes, and provide status updates on jobs in progress to project managers and management. Resolve problems and ensure customer satisfaction.
- Participate in work planning walk-downs, material identification/recommendation, man-hour estimating, and material procurement as required.
- Maintain good housekeeping practices by keeping work areas clean and organized.
- Ensure Human Performance Improvement (HPI) tools and strong safety culture principles are embedded into daily activities.
- Perform On-the-Job (OJT) instruction training for the qualification of other work disciplines.
- Maintain all training and qualifications as per Individual Training Plan and Job Function Requirements.
- Participate in all company safety programs, including but not limited to Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA), and Employee Safety Training (EST).
- Work to drawings, schematics, and work specifications to produce successful outcomes using modern techniques and tools of the trade.
- Obtain and maintain applicable qualifications.
- Demonstrate mastery of knowledge base and skill associated with technical specialty.
- Work extended periods of time in Radiological work areas, including the required PPE (Respiratory Protection, etc.).
Required:
- High School Diploma, or equivalent, and 5 years of relevant work experience; or recognized trade apprenticeship and 2 years of relevant work experience, or 2-year vocational training program and 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy (DOE) "L" clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Must have extensive experience working with exotic and specialty metals — including stainless steel, Inconel, carpenter 20, Hastelloy, and other high-alloy materials — with strong understanding of their unique handling, fit-up, and heat-treatment requirements.
- Must be capable of satisfactorily completing facility specific, continuous, and professional development training as required for duration of employment.
- Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining medical qualifications so as not to limit satisfaction of the minimum requirements defined in this document for the duration of employment.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license for duration of employment.
- Must be capable of obtaining Radiological Worker Qualification within 45 days of starting work and maintain qualification for duration of employment.
- Requires completion of the Fitter Qualification and other training and qualification as directed by Management.
- Proven ability to perform precision layout, including field measurements, coordinate calculations, and development of cut lists for complex pipe runs.
- Hands-on fabrication experience including cutting, beveling, fitting, and welding preparation across a variety of pipe schedules and diameters.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting isometric drawings, orthographic projections, and welding symbols with a high degree of accuracy.
- Proficiency with layout tools and techniques including trigonometry-based offsets, rolling offsets, and fabrication of complex fittings (miters, laterals, saddles).
- Experience fitting and aligning components for TIG/orbital welding processes, particularly critical for exotic metal joints.
- Ability to identify and prevent cross-contamination issues specific to exotic metal fabrication (e.g., carbon steel contamination of stainless/exotic alloys).
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot fit-up issues and make precise field adjustments.
