Purpose Provides advanced technical support and subject‑matter expertise for Environmental Health and Safety programs by conducting asbestos inspections and mold assessments; evaluating findings to identify potential exposure risks; supporting pre‑construction planning and incident response activities; and maintaining accurate regulatory documentation in accordance with applicable federal, state, and University requirements to protect building occupants and ensure compliance. Responsibilities Independently conduct asbestos inspections and mold assessments to identify asbestos‑containing materials and microbial growth; perform bulk and environmental sampling as needed; evaluate material condition, moisture conditions, and potential for exposure or disturbance; and ensure proper handling and submission of samples for laboratory analysis. Review laboratory results and field data for asbestos and mold; evaluate findings to determine potential health and exposure risks; and prepare clear, accurate inspection and assessment reports in compliance with applicable regulatory and University requirements. Provide technical guidance to project managers and stakeholders by reviewing project scope, historical records, and inspection requirements; support development of abatement or remediation plans; and ensure asbestos and mold hazards are identified and addressed prior to construction, renovation, or maintenance activities. Ensure all asbestos and mold assessment activities are performed in accordance with applicable federal, state (e.g., DSHS, TDLR), and University requirements; maintain inspection records, databases, and documentation; and support implementation of EHS asbestos and indoor air quality programs. Respond to water intrusion events, suspected mold growth, asbestos disturbances, and indoor air quality concerns; conduct field investigations; document conditions and findings; and coordinate with internal teams or subject matter experts to support timely and compliant resolution. Serve as a technical resource to project teams, contractors, and University personnel by providing guidance on asbestos hazards, mold risks, moisture control, regulatory requirements, and safe work practices. Perform duties in a safe, ethical, and professional manner; support EHS program initiatives; and contribute to continuous improvement of asbestos, mold, and indoor environmental quality management practices. Perform other related functions as assigned. Work is performed in accordance with normal trade practices and is inspected for conformity to standards, quality and quantity by journey‑level employees or supervisor. Attends staff meetings, safety training and meetings. Must wear respiratory/personal protective equipment (PPE) where required and performing duties. Participate in on‑call program. Required to carry University cell phone. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering, a Natural Science, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. DSHS Asbestos Inspector License. TDLR Mold Technician License. 2 years of experience in asbestos inspection and mold assessments. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate. Preferred Qualifications At least two years of experience in Environmental Health and Safety or related field. Experience working in a university setting. 3 years of experience in conducting asbestos inspections and a TDLR Mold Assessment Consultant license. Driving Required This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident. Employees who are required to have a CDL are subject to drug and alcohol testing (pre‑employment, post‑accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return‑to‑duty, and follow‑up drug and alcohol testing). Considerable walking, standing, squatting, stooping, and moving of heavy materials and equipment in all weather conditions. May be required to use respirator/personal protective equipment (PPE) while performing duties. May be exposed to loud noise, high dust and allergen levels. May be required to lift up to 50lbs. Often required to twist, grasp, push, pull and bend. Participate in on‑call program. Work Shift 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday, days. Except during emergencies.
