Staff Psychologist - Geropsychologist

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application. Qualifications United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both spoken and written English. Education: Must possess one of the following qualifications: a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) – the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS) – or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed; or a doctoral degree in any area of psychology plus successful completion of a re‑specialization program with an accredited internship; or a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature plus a fully accredited internship; or a new VHA psychology internship program in the process of applying for APA accreditation; or any VHA‑approved pre‑doctoral internship; or a non‑APA/CPA intern who is currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology and maintains certification. (NOTE: Once board certified, the employee is required to maintain board certification.) Licensure: Must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia. Non‑licensed applicants who meet the eligibility requirements may receive a temporary appointment as a “graduate psychologist” at the GS‑11 or GS‑12 grade under 38 U.S.C. 7405 [(c)(2)(B)] for a period not to exceed two years, subject to providing care only under supervision of a licensed psychologist. Failure to obtain licensure within that period is grounds for termination. Grade Determinations: GS‑11 (Entry Level) – No additional experience beyond the basic requirements. GS‑12 (Developmental Level) – At least one year of experience as a professional psychologist equivalent to the next lower grade level; non‑licensed psychologists must practice under supervision with less intensity than the GS‑11 level. GS‑13 (Full Performance Level) – At least two years of experience as a professional psychologist, including at least one year equivalent to the GS‑12 grade level. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of a wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods and ability to apply them to diverse patient populations; ability to design and implement effective treatment strategies; ability to incorporate new clinical procedures; ability to conduct research activities, including designing and implementing clinical research projects; ability to perform basic research tasks within a research team; ability to provide professional advice and consultation in professional psychology and behavioral health; knowledge of clinical research literature. Duties VA Careers – Psychologist: Total Rewards of an Allied Health Professional The Staff Psychologist is assigned to the Behavioral Medicine and Neuropsychology Service (BMNS) within the Behavioral Health Service Line at the Harry S. Truman Veterans Hospital (Truman VA). The Truman VA is a 1C Medical Center providing both outpatient medical and mental health services at the main facility and at each of the eight Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). Duties may include: Provide a full range of psychodiagnostic services – including medical and, if appropriately trained and credentialed, neuropsychological assessment and testing of patients; select the optimum battery of tests or procedures to gain appropriate information; interpret and report findings in the medical record in a timely fashion and integrate findings to inform treatment planning; ensure all assessments comply with documentation and timeliness standards established by the Medical Center and the Joint Commission. Develop, implement, and document a focused treatment plan for any assigned caseload of patients (e.g., GeriPACT) – including prompt completion of clinical reminders; formulate a mutually agreed upon plan of treatment with measurable goals, objectives, and methods based on psychological assessment; utilize the Computerized Patient Record System and any other electronic software assigned by the Supervisor (e.g., Mental Health Suite) to document treatment planning and progress; ensure treatment plan documentation meets the standards set by the Medical Center and the Joint Commission. Provide consultation to professional staff within the Truman VA and to community providers concerning clinical assessment findings and appropriate treatment plans; draw upon knowledge of current research literature and patient‑centered factors to determine recommendations; assist the Supervisory Psychologist in designing, developing, and implementing clinical programming and in executing ongoing program evaluation and data‑driven quality improvement projects to monitor effectiveness of clinical programming; facilitate liaisons with other health care programs to coordinate and improve services; perform any other duties assigned. Paid Time Off: 37–50 days of annual paid time off per year (13–26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year). Parental Leave: After 12 months of employment – up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave in connection with birth, adoption, or foster care placement of a child. Child Care Subsidy: After 60 days of employment, full‑time employees with a total family income below $144,000 may be eligible for a childcare subsidy up to 25% of total eligible childcare costs (maximum monthly subsidy of $416.66). Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% contributions by VA Insurance; federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care insurance, many of which can be carried into retirement.
