Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment.
Program approval, including the award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years), is determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.
Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements indicated in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
- United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy).
- Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
- The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Approved residencies are:
- Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
- Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
- Other residencies (non‑US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States).
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged.
- PRPs have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.

- Physical requirements: This position requires a pre‑employment physical, ability to lift 15‑44 pounds, push (approx. 2 hours), reach above shoulder, use of fingers and both hands, walk and stand for 3‑5 hours, kneel, rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision 13” to 16” to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision 20/20 to 20/40, depth perception, color discrimination, hearing aid permitted.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care specific to subspecialty in the inpatient and ambulatory clinic settings.
- Provide timely screening and resolution of consultations from other disciplines in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Diagnose, treat, and manage patients referred for management of GI disorders including liver disease, hepatitis C, and liver transplants using standard and customary methods and techniques in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.
- Perform diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower endoscopy procedures, PEG placement, esophageal dilation.
- Responsible for administration and management of moderate/conscious sedation used during procedures.
- Order diagnostic tests and discriminate between normal and abnormal findings to make appropriate treatment decisions.
- Document care in the medical record in keeping with the bylaws of the Medical Center.
- Complete patient encounters – inpatient and outpatient consults, notes – and correctly code visits in accordance with coding guidelines.
- Provide supervisory oversight of residents, fellows, medical students, NP/PA students as appropriate.
- Participate effectively in team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care.
- Report to the Chief of Gastroenterology and participate in medical duties related to quality of care, peer review, facility committees, and other performance improvement activities as assigned.
- Board certification is required for this position.

- License: One full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.
- CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).
- Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
- Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm; weekend and holiday call expectations may apply.
