Project Manager (Automotive - Travel Required)

Position Overview The Project Manager (Automotive) is accountable for developing, maintaining, updating, distributing, and managing estimates, observing and monitoring the performance of the Superintendent, and overseeing change orders and the billing process. This individual will also be responsible for supervising subcontractor performance, ensuring the project meets quality and performance specifications and regulatory requirements, managing the start-up of the project, reviewing costs against estimates for each total project, and updating labor productivity reports. Responsibilities Develops, maintains, updates, distributes and manages estimates. Informs the Vice President/Project Director of needed change orders. Develops or ensures the development of a detailed schedule with milestones and a critical path that meets contractual obligations and the time requirements of the client. Identifies project-staffing needs. Assigns actual operational personnel to the project in conjunction with the appropriate Vice President. Plans with the Superintendent to obtain the number and type of craft workers needed. Ensures a project management plan incorporating the client’s requirements and expectations are developed and implemented for the project. Develops the overall plan for constructing the project, including methodology, means and master schedule. Requires extensive knowledge of cost accounting/reporting to recognize and correct cost overruns and compensate for estimating mistakes. Ensures a smooth flow of financial information to support functions. Ensures billing is done accurately and in a timely fashion to ensure a positive cash flow for the organization. Monitors accounts receivable based on aged receivables reports and contacts client or subcontractor to determine reasons for non-payment. Regularly studies the labor productivity report and budget status and takes action to keep the project on budget. Reviews and approves charges to the project. Travels to company and subsidiary offices, offsite client, subcontractor, and supplier meetings across North America as required. Maintains regular and reliable attendance as required by supervision and project obligations. Management Competencies: Maintains daily logs, test reports, inspection reports and permits; coordinates safety and quality documentation; manages risk exposures; coordinates project start-up with internal and external teams; builds effective working relationships; conducts regular meetings with subcontractors; manages change orders and subcontractor payments; ensures subcontractor performance aligns with contract scope. Construction Means and Methods: Ensures project meets quality, regulatory requirements and supervises work; serves as liaison with local inspectors. End User Interaction: Builds and maintains positive client relationships; understands client business issues; communicates project progress and timely changes to the client and project team. Performance: Enforces safety policies, leads safety meetings, and ensures project site safety; tracks costs against estimates; approves subcontractor invoices and salary timesheets; supports MBE requirements. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree related to the construction industry. At least 5 years’ experience in project engineering, construction project management, or related activities with exposure to projects over $20 million in the automotive and/or manufacturing sectors. Specific experience related to equipment installation (tooling, conveyors, and related structural steel modifications) and managing self-perform scopes. Candidates may reside anywhere in the US but must be willing to travel to project locations across North America for extended periods (up to 85%).
