Provide instruction/supervision of student interns/clinical fellows. **Essential Functions*** Recognizes the importance of patient/staff safety precautions as it relates to their specific department/area of responsibility. Consistently utilizes precautions and follows appropriate procedures to enhance patient/staff safety in their daily operations. Identifies and reports any potentially dangerous situations to their manager which could cause medical error/patient or staff harm. Immediately takes action, where appropriate, to minimize the risk of injury. Where appropriate to staff member’s responsibilities, reports errors, when these occur, to their supervisor and on an occurrence report. Participates, when appropriate, in Root Cause Analyses and/or other efforts to reduce risk of medical error/patient or staff harm.* Participates in performance/customer service improvement; actively assists in improving performance based on results obtained from customer satisfaction/PI activities. Recognizes systems approach to PI. Where appropriate, participates in Performance Improvement activities including team membership. Identifies processes that need improvement.* Evaluate assigned clients/patients and determine casual factors for Speech & Language/swallowing impairments; gather data related to clients’/ patients’ communication/swallowing disorder; select appropriate evaluation tools for the purpose of assessment. Administer diagnostic testing procedures to determine the extent of the patients' impairment and the prognosis for improvement all with consideration of age groups: Infants (0-1 year), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Geriatrics (over 65 years)* Develop individualized treatment programs for clients/patients diagnosed as needing Speech and Language intervention.* Re-evaluate and modify treatment programs as warranted considering age groups: Infants (0-1 year), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Geriatrics (over 65 years)* Communicate observations, facts and comments with interdisciplinary team members, individually and through team meeting presentations as is appropriate.* Demonstrate clinical assessment skills based on the principles of growth and development. Identify treatment appropriate for the various age groups: Infants (0-1 year), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Geriatrics (over 65 years)* Document initial evaluations, progress notes, correspondence notes, discharge summaries, as well as other written documentation in a timely legible fashion following Hospital/Department policy.* Demonstrates knowledge of procedure and safety protocol in conjunction with Radiology for performing Videofluoroscopic Barium Swallow Studies.* Demonstrates working knowledge of phones, fax machines, copiers and computers.* Demonstrates state of the art treatment skills.* Demonstrates a continued pursuit of knowledge and training through professional literature, videos, lectures, inservices, seminars, continuing education or classes toward a higher degree from an accredited instructor.* Attends all hospital or departmental inservices.* Provides hospital or departmental inservices twice a year.* Provides community education.* Favorably represents the Hospital in all professional interactions with other agencies and the community in general.* Participates in peer review/PI projects.* Supervises graduate students as assigned.* Participates in clinical supervision of CF.* Infant (0 – 1 year): Increases knowledge base through appropriate materials, e.g., videos, professional literature, seminars and continuing education. Demonstrates developmentally appropriate skills that concentrate on achieving milestones, including prelinguistic and early language development, oral motor and swallow functioning skills. Demonstrates critical problem solving skills by choosing appropriate tools of evaluation interpreting the data and developing treatment plans. Demonstrates interpretation of non-verbal communication and responds to new information. Educates and encourages family/care giver in techniques providing language, stimulation, feeding/swallowing stimulation.* Pediatrics (1 – 12 years): Increase knowledge base through appropriate materials, e.g., videos, professional literature, seminars and continuing education. Demonstrates skills that concentrate on achieving milestones, expressive and receptive language skills, voice disorders, articulation, oral motor and swallow function skills, including cognitive learning skills and play development. Demonstrates critical problem solving skills by choosing the appropriate tools of evaluation, interpreting the data and developing a treatment plan. Demonstrates interpretation of non-verbal communication, simple sentences, and symbolism to identify the needs of the patient. Use of praise to reward; use of clear rules whenever appropriate. Educate and encourage staff, caregiver and child in techniques to facilitate oral motor and articulation skills, expressive and receptive language skills, feeding and swallowing skills, appropriate voice use and play skills. Maintains open, friendly manner. Uses cheerful, confident tone of voice. Answers questions appropriately.* Adolescents (13 - 17 years): Increases knowledge base through appropriate materials, e.g., videos, professional literature, seminars and continuing education. Demonstrates developmentally appropriate skills that concentrate on receptive and expressive language skills, oral motor and articulation skills, appropriate voice skills, swallowing function, as well as memory and learning/cognitive skills, including abstract thinking. Demonstrates critical problem solving skills by identifying needs or deficits, choosing appropriate evaluation tools and developing a treatment plan. Demonstrates effective communication and therapeutic use of self to encourage the child’s feeling of usefulness and competency, as well as respect and acceptance. Educate and encourage adolescent, staff and caregiver in techniques to facilitate language, voice, oral motor and swallow function. Maintains open, friendly manner. Uses cheerful, confident tone of voice. Answers questions appropriately. Demonstrates the ability to apply positive communication skills. Demonstrates the ability to interact with this age group with knowledge base.* Adults (18 - 65 years): Increases knowledge base through appropriate materials, e.g., videos, professional literature, seminars and continuing education. Demonstrates skills that concentrate on communication in ADLs, work and leisure, acquiring new skills, regaining loss of function or augmenting expression. Demonstrates critical problem solving skills by identifying needs, issue or deficits, choosing appropriate evaluation tools, developing treatment plan and developing strategies. Demonstrates effective two-way communication. Maintains an honest, supportive and hopeful dialogue focusing on strength and future goals, not limitations. Educate and encourages staff, patient and caregiver in techniques to increase communicative effectiveness and safety of swallow. Maintains open, friendly manner.
