POLICE OFFICER LATERAL

Position Overview Perform professional law enforcement and crime prevention work involved in the protection of life and property by enforcing State, Federal, Municipal laws and regulations. Work is performed in accordance with departmental and City rules and regulations, and patrol officers receive assignments and instructions from higher‑ranked officers. Assignments include uniformed patrol, traffic control, technical and staff service, administration, special support team activities, and investigative work. Work requires initiative and independent judgment in routine and emergency situations involving potential injury or loss of life. Results are evaluated by superior officers through personal inspections, report review, and discussions. Work is subject to rotating shift assignments, irregular hours, holiday assignments, and on‑call status. Recruiting for Lateral Police Officers This job post is recruiting for Lateral Police Officers. Responsibilities Operate an automobile, motorcycle, bicycle, or water craft to perform patrol assignments on an assigned shift. Respond to calls of service and appear at scenes of disorder, emergencies, and crime. Conduct property checks on businesses and homes for burglary and other criminal activities. Stop and question suspicious persons; assist with a variety of emergencies. Prepare reports of incidents and investigations. Contact victims, witnesses, and suspects for detailed interviewing when required. Secure, investigate and collect evidence at the scenes of incidents and crimes. Investigate criminal complaints and take statements. Serve warrants. Follow up on investigations when assigned. Appear in court proceedings when summoned, on and off duty. May act as the School Resource Officer for schools. Arrest, detain, transport, and be responsible for the care and safety of detained persons. Issue traffic citations for violations of laws and ordinances and perform traffic control assignments and accident investigations. Intervene in disputes to protect the public and maintain order. Assist with receiving, searching, fingerprinting, photographing, and bonding of prisoners. May perform safety inspections on commercial vehicles. May be assigned to perform special duties. Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. Perform related duties as assigned. Requirements Minimum age of 21 years. United States citizen at the time of application. High School Diploma or GED; any combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position is desirable. Successful completion of required training and AZ POST (Arizona Peace Officer Standards & Training) certification. Possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Applicants will be required to submit to an employment interview, a Physical Fitness evaluation, a thorough Background Investigation, a Polygraph examination, a Psychological examination, a Medical examination, and a drug screen. Any falsification, omission, misrepresentation or deception in any stage of processing will result in immediate removal from consideration. Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualifications are ineligible for any position within the Department. Laws and regulations pertaining to arrest, search and seizure, and general police work. Skills Meet and maintain state‑mandated firearms requirements. Rapidly attain and fire a handgun from behind cover in prone, kneeling or sitting positions. Retain a handgun in a holster with one hand and shove a suspect back with the other hand. Rapidly and safely reload a handgun with the weapon pointing downrange. Stand and move about for prolonged periods of time. Abilities Read, write and communicate in English using telephone, police radio or face‑to‑face. Understand departmental and City policies, instructions, laws and regulations. Direct traffic from four or more directions. Understand police and fire radio transmissions; distinguish vehicles, stop lights, suspect eye color, hair and clothing color. Have visual acuity to see during low visibility or darkness and identify a license plate number within 100 ft. in daylight. Smell odors of smoke, marijuana, alcohol, natural gas, acetone, or gasoline. Remain alert for long periods. Detect and distinguish sounds of gunfire, muffled screams, cries for assistance, glass breaking, squealing tire, and radio alert tones. Verbally communicate and talk clearly and effectively in a loud voice. Physical Demands & Work Environment The job requires lifting, dragging, pursuing, crawling, climbing, operating vehicles, and working under various weather conditions. The employee regularly works in varying weather conditions, including extremely hot weather. Noise level is usually moderate.
