Job Summary Performs Phlebotomy with minimal guidance. Responsible for accessioning specimens or patient tissue materials for testing, including packaging specimens or tissue materials to be sent out to the referring laboratory. Works closely with all laboratory staff, medical staff, and external customers. Performs customer service functions including telephone etiquette and basic troubleshooting and problem resolution. Key Responsibilities Performs patient check‑in procedure and updates patient information as necessary in the registration system. When applicable, places generic manual orders and sends them to Specimen Receiving or to the Patient Service Specialist for accessioning. Instructs patients on proper collection of urine, stool, sputum, and saliva specimens, and provides appropriate collection supplies. Administers oral solutions for glucose tolerance testing according to established training and identifies the best method for retrieving blood samples and other specimens. Demonstrates Credo behaviors in all interactions including explaining blood draw procedures to patients, answering questions about the process, and assisting patients, co‑workers, and internal customers as appropriate. Verifies patient identification with two identifiers both before and after venipuncture, labeling tubes immediately following the venipuncture in front of the patient. Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and obtaining blood specimens by performing venipunctures and capillary sticks according to age‑specific guidelines. Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing, including centrifuging and aliquoting blood samples, packaging and storing specimens appropriately for transport using guidance from lab test directories. Takes responsibility for safety checks, supply management, and assists with training. Acts as a preceptor to students and new hires. Performs other duties as assigned. Technical Capabilities Phlebotomy (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of phlebotomy in practical applications of a difficult nature. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to deliver phlebotomy services independently and to train others. Specimen Collection (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of specimen collection in practical applications of a difficult nature. Able to train and educate others independently. Quality Assurance (Novice): Continuously analyzes and evaluates work processes, contributing creative solutions and maintaining quality standards. Equipment Maintenance (Novice): Demonstrates proficiency in maintaining equipment and ensuring parts inventory is sufficient. Patient Assessment (Intermediate): Demonstrates mastery of patient assessments, trains and educates others independently. Customer Service (Novice): Responds efficiently to customer service requests, maintains clear communication, and meets the needs of customers. Core Accountabilities Performs routine tasks that may impact team performance with occasional guidance. Solves routine problems using discretion and research. Applies knowledge of standards, processes, and procedures relevant to the role. Provides guidance to entry‑level co‑workers.
