Bus Aide

Assist in providing safe, reliable, and supportive transportation for students. The Bus Aide supports the bus driver and assists students, including students with disabilities or individualized transportation needs, while maintaining a safe, respectful, professional, and welcoming environment.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of safety rules, regulations and procedures
  • Current First Aid/CPR card, or ability to obtain as required by the District
  • Ability to meet District and state background check requirements
  • Ability to safely implement approved student safety and emergency procedures, including physical intervention when trained, authorized, and required
  • Ability to learn and properly use student transportation safety and emergency equipment
  • Ability to document events occurring on the bus
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, and deal with students, parents and staff in a warm and confident manner
  • Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively and to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to work with students in a patient, fair, consistent, respectful, and professional manner
  • Complete an Annual Disclosure Statement
  • Complete a Washington State Patrol criminal record check

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Assist the bus driver in maintaining a safe and orderly environment on and around the school bus
  • Monitor student behavior and reinforce applicable bus rules and safety expectations
  • Assist students in boarding and exiting the bus in a safe and orderly manner
  • Assist students with disabilities or mobility needs, including students who use wheelchairs or other mobility equipment
  • Properly use and assist with approved transportation safety equipment, including wheelchair securement systems, seat belts, harnesses, or other equipment as assigned and trained
  • Follow established procedures and staff directions related to student behavior plans, medical protocols, safety plans, IEP transportation accommodations, and other individualized student needs
  • Load and unload children, including but not limited to, those in a wheelchair and/or ambulatory student
  • Secure all students when necessary in restraints, such as, seat belts, wheelchair securement systems, or other approved transportation safety equipment
  • Maintain active supervision and watchful vigilance of students during transportation
  • Attend to student needs while en route, within the scope of the position
  • Assist the driver with reasonable requests related to the safe transportation and supervision of students
  • Know the location and proper use of emergency and safety equipment located on the bus (reflectors, first aid kid, fire extinguisher, two-way radio)
  • Report student behavior, safety concerns, incidents, injuries, or other concerns to the bus driver and/or appropriate supervisor
  • Restrain students as needed to ensure that they do not injure themselves or others
  • Escort students to and from designated locations when required
  • Maintain current knowledge of District policies, procedures, and practices applicable to the position
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, family, employee, and District information in accordance with applicable laws and District policies
  • Maintain professional and appropriate interactions with students, families, staff, and members of the public
  • Other duties as assigned

Terms of Employment:

  • Hours: 4 hours per day
  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday: 7:30-9:30am, 1:30-3:30pm
  • Wednesday: 7:30-9:30am, 12:15-2:15pm
  • Bargaining Unit: PSE
  • Leave: In accordance with the PSE Collective Bargaining Agreement
  • Retirement: Plan choice available through DRS
  • Evaluation: Annually
