Wastewater Treatment Operator The Wastewater Treatment Operator oversees the safe and efficient operation of wastewater treatment processes at a landfill wastewater plant. This role focuses on controlling equipment, monitoring treatment systems, and ensuring that harmful materials, chemicals, and microorganisms are removed or neutralized so that treated water is safe to release into the environment. The operator performs routine testing, adjusts chemical dosages, maintains accurate records of water quality and compliance, and supports the overall reliability and safety of plant operations. Responsibilities Control equipment and monitor processes that remove or destroy harmful materials, chemicals, and microorganisms from wastewater. Operate machinery that converts wastewater from drains and sewers into a form that is safe to release into the environment. Run tests to verify that treatment processes are functioning correctly and producing water that meets quality standards. Take samples and perform laboratory or field tests to determine the quality of the water being produced. Keep detailed records of water quality, plant performance, and other key indicators to document compliance with regulations and standards. Operate and maintain pumps, motors, and filtration systems that move and treat water and wastewater throughout the plant. Read meters, gauges, and other instrumentation to ensure that plant equipment is working properly and within specified parameters. Monitor plant indicators and make necessary adjustments to optimize performance and maintain safe operating conditions. Adjust the amount of chemicals, such as chlorine and fluorine, being added to the water to achieve required treatment levels. Use computerized systems and control interfaces to monitor, track, and adjust plant processes in real time. Plan and support emergency reaction protocols to respond effectively to plant upsets, equipment failures, or other incidents. Respond to and fix chemical leaks and oxygen deficiencies to maintain a safe working environment and protect equipment. Perform basic maintenance and repairs on plant equipment to prevent breakdowns and extend equipment life. Inspect plant equipment regularly to identify potential issues and ensure that systems operate efficiently and safely. Track inventory of chemicals, supplies, and parts required for plant operation and maintenance. Maintain accurate operational, maintenance, and compliance records in accordance with regulatory and company requirements. Work closely with the site superintendent to coordinate daily operations, address issues, and implement improvements. Monitor the overall plant operations and work environment to ensure safety, compliance, and efficient performance. Drive a vehicle onsite to move between different areas of the plant and support operational and inspection activities. Essential Skills Experience operating wastewater treatment plants and related equipment. Proficiency in running tests, taking samples, and interpreting results to assess water quality. Capability to operate and maintain pumps, motors, and filtration systems used in wastewater treatment. Skill in reading and interpreting meters, gauges, and instrumentation to evaluate equipment performance. Ability to use computerized systems and controls to monitor and adjust plant processes. Knowledge of chemical dosing and the ability to adjust treatment chemicals such as chlorine and fluorine safely and accurately. Competence in basic maintenance and repair of mechanical and treatment equipment. Strong record-keeping skills to document water quality, plant operations, and regulatory compliance. Awareness of safety practices related to chemical handling, leak response, and oxygen-deficient environments. Operational management skills to oversee daily plant activities and respond to changing conditions. Valid capability to drive a vehicle onsite to access various areas of the plant. Additional Skills & Qualifications Background in project management to support planning and coordination of operational initiatives. Experience with instrumentation and control systems used in water and wastewater treatment facilities. Operations management experience in an industrial, utility, or environmental services setting. Familiarity with landfill wastewater treatment processes and environmental regulations. Ability to develop and follow emergency reaction protocols for plant incidents. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Homestead, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $28.00/hr.
