JOB TITLE: Cashier

An AFSCME 3308 Bargaining Unit Position

REPORTS TO: Court Services Supervisor or Financial Services Supervisor


GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Court Services Supervisor, or Financial Services Supervisor, performs various clerical tasks for the Court. Receives and accounts for large sums of currency and cash paid in person or by mail. Performs customer service functions with Management, Attorneys, Court Staff, Litigants, and other government agencies. Specific duties may vary depending on the Division.

1. Receives, records, and processes payments for fines, costs and fees made in person, mail, or drop box. Issues checks and receipts. Daily balances cash register receipts with summary of revenue collected.

1. Accepts currency in the form of cash, money orders, credit cards, and official/certified checks. Operates cash registers and posts payments to appropriate accounts.

1. Reconciles financial transactions using a calculator and prepare bank deposits.

1. Meets or exceeds fiduciary duties consistent with Court policies regarding overages/shortages and case processing, court appearances, and charges.

1. Processes bond transactions and maintains bond ledger including, but not limited to, posting bonds to files and ledgers on terminals. Balances bond reports and receipts with cash and/or bond register receipts. Balances inventories of outstanding bonds. Updates bonds by reviewing cases associated with bonds to determine how the bond will be closed. Contact appropriate Court personnel as needed.

1. Post bonds and remove warrants/suspensions where applicable utilizing the Court's JIS system.

1. Assesses fines and payments based on established schedules or decisions. Posts payments to appropriate accounts.

1. Maintains various financial records and documents. Prepares summaries of payables and receivables. Uses a computer terminal to post orders, payments, and other information. Performs computer searches to locate information. Prepares schedules and special reports based on information compiled from financial and statistical data.

1. Respond to customer inquiries and problems (received by telephone, U.S. Mail, etc.) relating to payments, errors, or policy and procedure concerns; perform troubleshooting functions on payment errors in the Court system.

1. Operates cash registers, tele checks, validation machine, bookkeeping machine, check writers, and Court software to calculate, verify, and record financial data, and prepare checks to be refunded or applied to disposed of cases.

1. Performs tax intercept duties, including responding to and troubleshooting inquiries and problems from the Treasury Department and defendants, processes refunds due from the Treasury Department, and maintains spreadsheets and other records related to tax intercept.

1. Schedule cases for the next Court proceedings, as needed.

1. Maintains confidential information regarding the employee, financial, and other Court records.

14.Performs general clerical tasks, as needed. Including reviewing and verifying documents associated with financial transactions.

15.Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Obtain and maintain all required state licenses and certifications necessary to perform the functions of the Cashier.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

1. The job requires the completion of a high school education or equivalent.

1. Two (2) years of progressively more responsible experience in Court operations preferred.

1. One (1) year of customer service experience.

1. One (1) year of general clerical experience is required.

1. One (1) year experience as a cashier in a non-fast food hi-volume setting, or as a bank/credit union teller preferred.

1. Mathematical ability to make complex mathematical calculations with speed and accuracy.

1. Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize word processing, spreadsheets, database applications, and data entry.

1. Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to simultaneous handling of multiple projects, working on projects requiring concentration and attention to detail, and dealing with concerns of citizens and employees, with distracting influences such as people, phone calls, and noise.

1. Ability to communicate with Court personnel and outside organizations in the exchange of information.

1. Strong reading and comprehension skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Normal office environment with little discomfort due to heat, dust, noise, etc.

1. Ability to work extended workdays beyond 7.5 hours a day. Evening hours, holidays, and weekends will also be required when scheduled.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:

1. Strength, dexterity, coordination, and vision to use a keyboard and video display terminal daily. Ability to communicate with the public and Court staff. Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper. Occasional lifting of objects weighing up to fifteen (15) pounds such as files, stacks of papers, references, and other materials. Moving from place to place within an office. Some reaching for items above and below desk level.
2. Ability to occasionally sit, walk, or stand for long periods, perform repetitive movements, and work in confined areas.
