Clinical Scientist

Clinical Scientist – Band 7 Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest and largest NHS hospital trusts. The Imaging Physics and Radiation Safety unit within the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering directorate seeks a Clinical Scientist with experience in diagnostic radiology physics and radiation safety. Job Overview Join a growing team of clinical scientists and technologists contributing to the development and delivery of diagnostic radiology and radiation safety services across the region. Key Responsibilities Support quality assurance and performance testing of X‑ray equipment. Provide support to Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) and Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs). Maintain high standards of service delivery and contribute to service development and innovation. Travel to hospitals across the region and hold a valid full UK driving licence. Participate in teaching programmes, including delivery of the Newcastle Modernising Scientific Careers Scientific Training Programme. Engage in research and development projects, supervise and train less‑experienced staff. Contribute to advanced healthcare science activities and specialist advice and training. Work Hours 37 hours 30 minutes per week. Qualifications & Education Degree or equivalent in a relevant subject. Appropriate postgraduate degree at master’s level, or equivalent specialist knowledge. HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist, or working towards registration. Full UK‑valid driving licence. Knowledge & Experience Good knowledge and experience of scientific method, data collection, and analysis. Knowledge of scientific theory, legislation, standards, guidance and safety principles relevant to the area. Desirable Criteria Knowledge of relevant quality assurance or calibration procedures. Knowledge of functioning and safe use of relevant clinical diagnostic equipment. Experience of performing, publishing and presenting research. Teaching, training and mentoring skills. Essential Skills & Abilities Ability to interpret complex technical information, undertake complex calculation and data analysis. Good written and oral communication and presentation skills. Excellent team working skills and ability to work independently. IT skills including use of databases and spreadsheets. Behavioural Attributes Willingness to travel to other sites regularly.
